Yes but you have credit history. I could do the same, but sounds like this is a younger person with no history. Best if he has options so he does not get screwed.
Also, to the OP, a bank will not laugh at out. They will sit down and work with you to show you what you can or cannot borrow. A dealership will try to get you in a loan no matter what and might screw you also.
