Do you let other people drive your car?

Recently, i took my car to get a new diff installed. the tech guy asked for my keys. i looked at him for about a second and i hesitantly gave him the key so he could move the car into the shop.
So i watch him get on my car and drive it just a short distance into the lift bay.
It was awesome to see my car in motion, i had seen tons of other z's but never my own. i had just installed swift springs and it was just a treat to see my own car looking so good from the outside. it's just something i had never really get to see in real time.

sure, other people have driven my car, but i was always in the passenger seat. and they were no strangers. just a couple of times for a few miles.

It was a weird feeling, it was a treat to see my car in motion, but at the same time i felt like my car was going to be totaled or something.....haha.

kenchan 03-07-2013 08:11 PM

yah, i know exactly wat you mean.

i personally dont let anyone drive my cars unless absolutely necessary.

DEpointfive0 03-07-2013 08:18 PM

I don't give a fúck who drives my car, I hope the motherfúcker gets totaled soon so I can get out of the Nissan brand

Haboob 03-07-2013 08:18 PM

Only if it's being serviced (tires, dealership (yikes), or the car-wash (hand-wash of course), etc.).

Friends? Nope. You can ride along, but that's it.

I have trust issues. :ugh:

Mike 03-07-2013 08:18 PM

I don't care if anyone else drives them. Aside from the 370, they are all insured and covered.

ts-c63 03-07-2013 08:23 PM

the only friends I let drive my car are friends that also have nice cars. So they actually respect the car and know how to drive.

let me get your keys real quick

So far, nobody has driven my car yet except me, but I'm sure it'll change once I go for my inspection. The shop I go to they tend to pull the car out for you when they're done.

My car has 40 problems and the god damn dealershit really blamed all of them on me "needing in a battery"
Ex: Fuckérs are SO lazy the instead of test driving te car to see if Cruise control works, they plugged it into their computer which says it works... Fuckíng thing DOESN'T WORK...

No matter how hard I drive my sports car, it shouldn't have a laundry list of problems at 30k miles

silentnightz 03-07-2013 08:59 PM

I only let my family drive & service station drive my car. Most of my friends want to drive my z I say no. Knowing them they would probably crash it and say whoops my bad.

If you promise to total it in a way that I can blame it on someone else, or an act of God, I'll FedEx my keys to you and a plane ticket

chrischhorn 03-07-2013 09:05 PM

My wife drives my car all the time. I let one of my friends drive my car so I could hear the exhaust from outside. Another one after I installed the test pipes. Another one after headers. Another one after I installed the coilovers and sway bars on my car to see how much body roll I still had lol.

part it out, trade it in?

xxAGAVExx 03-07-2013 09:07 PM

Fortunately I have a MT so hardly anyone could even drive it if they wanted to. Nobody seems to know how to drive a stick anymore. :driving:

It's such a shame because I really appreciate everyone here...

I know... Last car got totaled in a flash flood in Houston...
Good chance I'll be driving it back to park it there and PRAYING TO CHRIST it floods again

And God bless State Farm, they paid me $7k over what I paid for that car, and they'd overpay on this car like $5000

Wouldn't it be wiser to just sell it to the dealer or private party and then go shopping? What year and is it paid off? Trades worry me because I hate trying to wrap my brain around the numbers.

Daishi9000 03-07-2013 09:43 PM

what if you leave your car just outside a hockey stadium when there is a big game, put visiting teams paraphernalia on the car and hope the home team loses and hope for a riot! the car will be destroyed in seconds!

I've thought about this when i had a ford!

Well, yeah, that's what I'd do
2009 Sport+Touring+Nav, 32k miles, Nissan Factory warranty to 120k miles

I can pay it off whenever I want. I'm just not paying it to build my credit score

That's 100% ok
When do you want the keys?

Z-Girl 12 03-07-2013 09:45 PM

I have always been pretty free in letting friends drive my car. I don't let anyone drive the Z though because of the drop. To easy to tear something up if they don't know how to drive it. I stare down the techs at Nissan as they pull it into the bay.

DEpointfive0 03-07-2013 09:49 PM

I'm going to stop cluttering this thread...
Sorry OP

TheGreatOne 03-07-2013 09:53 PM

In general I don't like letting people drive my car unless for service etc and as OP said, kinda cool to see your car in motion

I've only let real car guys drive it...like my buddy who had a 335, we swapped cars to see how they felt and I've let 2 guys from my club drive my Z down the 1/4 to see if they can get a better time with it than I could.

When I work on my car some friends help me, and when they work on their car I help them. I have no problem in letting my car buddies drive my Z, most of them are good friends I trust.

I did also teach one of my friends how to drive a MT on my Z, she picked it up within 5 minutes and I made her drive around town for about an hour (mind you at about 4AM).

One of my friends is a NASA instructor and he let me drive his spec miata on track for about 8 hours total, I let him drive my Z on track. At one track day when my brother's S14 blew a trubo gasket and melted the dizzy I let him borrow my Z for the rest of the event.

I wonder if your car and mine were built around the same time. :shakes head:

On topic, almost everyone is allowed to drive mine.

axmea? 03-08-2013 12:54 AM

I let people drive my car. My old boss floored the hell out of it and had the best grin ever. I ended up with a free lunch and a nice drink. Went home after lunch. The folks from AeroJacket drove it to their shop - he offered so I took it. He even took it back to where we can meet after the work was done. No one in my family drives stick though except for my wife but she's too scared to drive it.

The one's I do not trust are the valet. NEVER hand your fob to them EVER.

forza370z 03-08-2013 01:14 AM

Hell no... it's like you let your friends or strangers do your gf/wife!

Well, unless you have that special hobby.:icon18:

Wait... actually I didn't know the Nismo exhaust sounds really nice when I watched Nissan tech drove off my car to the bay. That was also the first time I realized my nismo wheels look so sick when the car is rolling. Perhaps I should let people drive my car more often.:icon17:

I'm just going to have someone take some video of me driving my car. That's the closest I'll get. :icon17:

bdavis89 03-08-2013 07:45 AM

Only my wife.

However, my buddy recently got a 2010 GT500..I can learn how to drive stick on it if I let him drive my car. :happydance:

DIGItonium 03-08-2013 08:18 AM

I stopped, unless I know for sure the person is trustworthy. I've had a few test drive and know how to shift very well.

The last person, who has driven and raced manuals for a long time, never blips the throttle when down shifting. He literally slams it in gear and force the synchros to play catch up by several thousand RPM. I turned S-Mode off for him because I was afraid it would interfere with his driving. It drove me nuts to see him go from 6th to 2nd at 40-50 MPH without blipping the throttle. The no lift shifts were terrible because the car would jump nearly 1000 RPM in between shifts, so it's slow.

When I had the 350Z I let this one guy, who told me he is very experienced driving manuals, drive it. First thing he did was kill the car. A few minutes later my car was releasing the burnt clutch smell.

Daishi9000 03-08-2013 09:08 AM

My sister wanted to drive my car, i was going to say yes, but then i looked at her cars wheels and they ALL had curve rash! i'm like! Uuuuhmmm! NO!!!!!!!!!

RonZwanson 03-08-2013 10:07 AM

I honestly wouldn't mind letting people I know drive my car, but none of my family or friends that I see on a regular can drive a stick. I have a friend in Cali who drives a 350, and I considered letting him drive my car when he was in town right after I bought it. But then I remembered that every single one of his cars has met a horrible demise. (Mostly not his fault, just bad luck. In fact his 350 was just "totaled, then un-totaled" by an insurance company after someone rear ended him. Bizarre story.)

I've had my car for a year and a half and so far the only people other than me who have driven it are service people. I'd never let a valet drive it if I didn't have to, especially since I know people who used to valet, and I've been told some of the shtuff they do with other people's cars.

danegrey 03-08-2013 11:12 AM

I let my son drive it because we see who can beat who at autocross....
