I remember when i bought my 07 civic SI back in 2006. I wasnt liking their numbers so i was ready to walk out... then the sales manager sat down with me and said "what can I do to get you in the SI? I can throw in a free spoiler for you!" I looked at him with the dumbest look and said "the SI comes with a spoiler standard..." That shut him up real quick haha

I work in service, and have crazy experiences with saleman everyday. The ones who make it a career learn the products and are successfully, that is abot 30% of the salesforce. The rest are the revolving door, they use the job as a stepping stone so they have employment, they do not care about you or the car, they care about $$. These are the ones that come to service to ask stupid question about oil, tires features etc, tell people lies etc... its ashame really...I hear 5-6 times a day "My salesman told me" the rest does not matter because whatever followed that line is a lie, as I type this I just delt with it, we have coupons we give new car buyers for first oil change for 15.95(it was free until honda switch to 0w-20 oil, its dang expensive) its clearly stated on the coupon, but his salesman told him it was free...imagine that, and that salesman quit last week. The sales manager picked up the tab, but come on!
In service we are required to take training modules on all the new cars, and still we do not know everything. Image the sales guys have 8-10 models, and many trim levels do not forget, I have cars coming in from 20 years plus and we are expected to know all the features and techincal aspects of 20+ years of cars...Its also amazing when you go to buy car AND TELL THEM YOU WORK AT A DEALER and they start their shenanigians...I had to walk out of a place I drove 3 hours to get to because they tried to scam me.

I was forced to stand outside on a customer parking spot and "welcome" the customer. I hated it. I felt pressured, the customer feels pressured, and I was sweaty all day. This is in Vegas mind you. My sales manager was an @ss. He would continually berate us every morning with insults except his favorite two. Short Vietnamese dude with a physically large head. "You don't sell car, you nothing but a broke d1ck"

1) Dealership 3 hours away told my brother that they had a 1998 MT 240sx for sale. My brother called them to ask they were sure it was an MT. The Salesman walked outside to check the car, came back to the phone and said it is. 3 hours later he got there and it was an automatic.

2) I brought my Stock 1997 240sx to the dealership for work. They argued with me that it was a nissan skyline, and then the tech who was working on it informed everyone I did the skyline conversion.

3) Dealership replaced water pump and forgot to add coolant. Get down the road and it overheats. Go back and they refill it. The next day my waterpump belt grenaded. Then I replaced the pump and belt myself and never had a problem.

When I was shopping around I found a z listed as sport package and touring that I was interested in, so I called and it was actually only touring...ok no biggie, said thanks but Ill have to look elsewhere because I need the sports package. He then told me that you can't get a z with both packages installed, as if that would increase my chances of buying his non sport package z. I politely corrected him that he was wrong and said bye bye!

I will say I have a friend who is a car salesman (as there are no jobs available in his line of education - Design right now) but he knows the ins and outs of cars better than most other car people I know.

I bet a million dollars that salesmen have even worse stories from customers. Ones that think they are expert car enthusiasts, when they are not. Ones that think they can negotiate... When they have no clue. Ones that believe every thing a salesman tells them.

It's funny when people complain about salesmen not knowing the product. It usually doesn't translate to a lower transaction price for those that know more about the car. Learn how to negotiate and it will get you much further than product knowledge.

You should understand what you are buying, however knowing every detail won't do you any good. In fact, if you prove that you know everything about the car then you have given up a powerful negotiation tactic. They know that if you entertain negotiation that you "want this car!".

In fact, I recommend you know what you are buying. Just don't flaunt that fact.

Like I said, you will get further knowing how to negotiate than learning more detail about the car.

This is one thing that I would very much like to get better at. I'm actually a good salesman and I can negotiate, but I no nothing about auto pricing and where the inflate the prices, so I don't know what's reasonable to fight them in and what's not.
It basically goes, I want a lower price, they say no,it's below msrp (or whatever) and I don't know what reasons to quote as to why they should do what I want lol.

I will say that when I bought my wife's audio A4 they tried to put a $990 "dealer document fee" in there. Googled it and found that it was just a bs markup so I called them on it, got it taken care of. Ended up getting a 2007 Audi A4 with 35,000 miles in great shape for $18,000. Not to bad but I wonder if I could have done better...

Not a Nissan dealer but I was doing the deal with Northside Mitsu. My car was coming from Westside mitsu since northside didnt have any Evo GSR's. I got to test drive a MR but not GSR. So i got the vin of the car i was getting and i went to Westside mitsu before they picked it up. So heres how the convo went

Me: Hey, im doing a deal with Northside Mitsu and they are picking this evo up for me in a day or so. Is it possible to test drive it before i sign the dotted line, heres the vin and the paperwork.

Salesmen: Sorry no, we dont allow test drives. Mitsubishi Policy

Me: Then why did Northside let me take out a new MR, no questions asked?

Salesmen: Not sure, but we dont allow test drives here. Not unless you give us a $1000 non-refundable deposit

Me: your kidding me right? You want me to give you $1000 to test drive a car that another dealership is picking up for me in a day or so? **** that.

Salesmen: Well you are about to spend $40,000 on a car, whats another $1000?

Me: Well im not going to spend $40,000 if I dont like the car. Like i said, i test drove the MR, i want to see how the 5 speed is.

Salesmen: well trust me, you will like this car. As you can see we added Rota P45R rims as well as a boost controller and adjusted the boost. This car is lightning fast. If you buy from us we will give you everything free of charge.

Me: Ok well im gonna get on the phone and tell northside I dont want this car anymore and to find me another one from another dealership.

Salesmen: Why?

Me: because i want a car that is stock and hasnt been touched. Unless you can provide paperwork showing what YOU guys did and then get me paperwork from Mitsubishi North American confirming it has warrenty. By the way, how much boost does these cars make and what did you turn it up to. (I already knew they peak ~19-20psi and taper down to 16psi)

Salesmen: yea we can find that no problem. We adjusted the boost to 45psi. I took it for a rip and roasted the tires off. Thats why we put these rims and new tires on

Me: really? 45psi? And thats safe? Ok well i want all the paperwork now.

Salesmen: Ill have it faxed over to northside mitsu for you.

Me: Can i take a look under the hood?

Salesmen: Sorry no, we dont want anyone messing around with the car

Me: are you serious? i have the paper work here for this car, you claim you added parts to it and turned the boost to 45psi and you wont let me check it out?"

So i walk away and just looked at other cars for a few mins. Found another sales guy that had no idea what was doing on. Asked him i could check the Evo i was getting out. He brought the keys out and i checked under the hood and started it up...all that good stuff. Car was completely stock (besides the rims) no boost controller, no nothing.

The other sales guy comes back and starts yelling at the guy that was helping me now. So i looked at him and said

Me: hey now, theres no need to yell at him. Just because you want to be a lieing *******, doesnt mean he has to be as well.

Salesmen: excuse me? what am i lieing about

Me: well first of all, telling me Mitsubishi wont allow test drives, second telling me you dont allow/want people looking under the hood of the car and my favorite, telling me you guys turned the turbo to 45psi.

Salemen: Sir i can get you the paperwork to show the work.

Me: please do, also please get me on the phone with mitsubishi north america and make sure that when a rod goes flying out of the engine because you guys ****** with it, i get a new engine under warrenty.

Salesmen: Sir i can assure you, its safe and wont blow up.

Me: Well i can tell you right now you are full of ****. For one the stock turbo in the evo can only flow 42lbs per min, meaning the compressor is to damn small and will not produce 45psi. At max it can produce 35psi, but even at 30psi its overspinning and two, without proper supporting mods, it will throw a rod.

Salesmen: Well i dont know what to tell you (as he walks away)
