I wait for oil temps to approach 180* F before I flog it.
On the dyno I make sure all runs are taken with oil between 180* and 205* F.

A properly designed oil cooling system will have a thermo plate to limit flow to the radiator until temp gets close to operating level - ie, it won't make much difference in warm-up time.

So the question is actually "Why doesn't my oil temp gauge work?", right?

Damn grave digger.
It takes mine about 15 minutes before I start to see the gauge move.

In looking at the data and doing some quick math, here is an average temp increase from ambient temp: • Engine coolant temp increases about 32F/min (18C/min) under light load < 3500 RPM (until the thermostat start to open, then it levels off) • Engine oil temp increases about 14F/min (8C/min) under light load < 3500 RPM (without factory oil cooler) Roughly right, on a 80F morning, it should take about 4-5 minutes (( 140-80) / 14) before the oil temp gauge starts to move. And at a 60F morning, ((140-60)/14) it should take about 5-6 minutes for the gauge to move. Is this accurate to what you have seen? |
