Wait about 2-3 minutes then drive easy until everything is up to operating temperature. Keep the RPM's on the low side until warmed up nicely.

My car is making a weird noise when shifting gears, I notice the noise goes away after 2-3 min. Could it be because I don't let the car warm up first? I normally turn it on, put on seat belt and I'm off. This has been my process for the last 11 months and the sound just recently started when I switch the battery. Any thoughts?

1 - search, this is not that thread & 2 - wait more then 2 seconds before you leave |

I typically wait for the RPM to come down to the 1 or below.
|
I keep it under 7k, when it's all warm and gooey inside, I let her have that extra 500 she's been begging me for.
edit: damn, I sound like a perv :D |
No waiting, start and go, just keeping the revs down until the oil is warmed up.

30sec is more than enough time for oil to flow, we're not driving no carbureted engine.

I voted for 6
|
I just go. But I don't push it till everything's hot.
To many choices. I picked 7 |
I just drive in reverse until warm.
|
Per the book 30sec minimum and I start moving the car slowly. 180 for the oil and then drive normally. I do not at all drive the car sportingly until the oil/gearbox and differential/rear end are warm and that takes a few miles.
Its a package deal and warming the car up is more than just the motor oil. Any performance driving needs a nice warm up on the brakes as well with proper tire pressures to boot. |
Anti-Idling Primer: Every Minute Counts I warm it up waiting for the garage door to open, and then off i go.
|
you turn your car on with the garage door closed? I would highly advise against doing that for your own safety :ugh2:

I don't drive my Z everyday so I always let it "warm up" for about 10 minutes. If I have to hop over to the store or gas station I just get in my truck, start it up and put it in reverse lol 145K miles and still running strong.
|
If I have time, 5 or 10 minutes. I'll run downstairs, start it up, lock it, then come upstairs and wait.
If I don't have time, I'll still wait until radiator temps get to where they usually operate at and take off. Always keep it under 4k until oil temps get to 180ish. |
I wait 30 secs or so before easy driving the first few miles. I'll up the time as it gets colder.

Wait 30 sec tops. Will drive slow till oil temp comes off the bottom.
|
I'll pull the car out of the garage when the water temp moves off the bottom dot. Light throttle, keeping it under 3k rpm until the oil is at running temp (180+).

I let it warms up util I get warmed up.:happydance::driving:

Depending on the weather, this usually takes about 1-3 mins. That's usually half a song to a full song on my iPod.

your engine lube is oil, not water.
|
I wait for oil temps to approach 180* F before I flog it.
On the dyno I make sure all runs are taken with oil between 180* and 205* F. |
Back from the dead. Curious for those without an oil cooler, how long does it take usually for oil temps to start moving while idling from a cold start?

A properly designed oil cooling system will have a thermo plate to limit flow to the radiator until temp gets close to operating level - ie, it won't make much difference in warm-up time. |

Damn grave digger.
It takes mine about 15 minutes before I start to see the gauge move. |

In looking at the data and doing some quick math, here is an average temp increase from ambient temp: • Engine coolant temp increases about 32F/min (18C/min) under light load < 3500 RPM (until the thermostat start to open, then it levels off) • Engine oil temp increases about 14F/min (8C/min) under light load < 3500 RPM (without factory oil cooler) Roughly right, on a 80F morning, it should take about 4-5 minutes (( 140-80) / 14) before the oil temp gauge starts to move. And at a 60F morning, ((140-60)/14) it should take about 5-6 minutes for the gauge to move. Is this accurate to what you have seen? |

During warmer months, I let it warm up for 30 seconds.
