Considering I learned on a Manual (as well as I am sure many others did) that is not the case as there is no way I would even *think* of left foot breaking on a manual transmission..

About the only time my right foot touches the brake is during hard/panic stops; just there in case of booster failure or other malfunction. The left foot beats it there every time.

I'm not sure if you guys read through the thread, but I'm in agreement with both of you, for that matter pretty much everyone. I stated that if you learned to left foot break from the get go and no one ever correct you, you probably will be fine. The same with driving a MT, but just because you have driven a MT car or truck doesn't mean you could jump into a semi and get it right without a lot of practice.

The bottom line, its what you have learned and what you are capable of learning. I can left foot brake enough to say I can do it, but is it the way I daily drive...heck no!!! Safety, Safety, Safety. I think its time for me to exit stage right and :gtfo2: :icon17:

I'm not sure what your point is, but I'm not advocating that anyone has or should, but I'm sure you stalled your car, truck or van numerous times when you hit the brake with your right foot and forgot to depress the clutch appropriately with your left foot when you were first learning to drive. It was quite embarrassing. Kind of like stalling our Z's because of the crappy clutch release and engagement our cars are prone with!!!

You said most people struggled with 'right foot breaking' which I assume was vs the alternative (left foot breaking) and that no I never had that problem.

Also the very first time I ever drove a car (when I was around 13) it was Manual transmission and I didn't stall it at all. The first time I stalled was when I was driving again on a permit and learning on a manual that was more difficult to drive. And it was always starting out in first. It never had anything to do with breaking or stalling coming to a stop. I have never had that happen. Ever. Hell Even when I went off on the track (pretty badly) I didn't stall it.

I'd be curious to know what the people that always drive 2 footed with an auto do when they drive a manual? I guess I'm showing my age, but maybe they never do, or did, drive sticks. I know my niece has never driven a stick. Kind of makes me sad. Seems like growing up and never learning to ride a bike. Or some big city dwellers that never learned to drive.

I can drive a stick, I just prefer an auto, especially in traffic. My first car was a '64.5 Mustang with a 200 Sprint and toploader. I got rid of a '67 Mustang with a toploader to make room in the garage for the Z. (Yeah, I like old Mustangs and toploaders :) ) When driving a manual, I use the same method everyone else does - left foot clutch, right foot gas and brake.

A couple years ago the company I work for sent all of us to school to get a CDL. I was amazed how many of my co-workers (all of us prior military, 90% retired) did not know how to drive a manual. It was a very interesting experience throughout the course, especially when we started taking the trucks out on public roads with the instructor riding along.

Yup, second nature. I realized this morning I was trail braking with my left foot on an off ramp... in my AT Ranger LOL!

Interesting article on Jalopnik about this.

I was just about to post that link

ever since i got a herniated disc, it has been uncomfortable to drive my truck with my right foot... so i drive with my left foot with no problems. When im in the Z though, I have to use both feet (6MT)

DEpointfive0 02-26-2013 03:50 PM

I can see and understand both sides of the story...

I'm 100% sure that a driver with a foot on each pedal can hit the brake faster than me using only one foot for both pedals

I am also 100% sure that anyone who decides to use 2 pedals can gain enough finesse to brake without looking like a retard (AKA me)

Problem is, I'm 90% sure that (god forbid) anyone who is going to get into an accident and isn't drunk is also going to clench up like a motherf*****, and slam their feet to the ground (I know I did when I got into my accident [other driver's failt])... And since both feet are on each of the pedals, they're a bit more screwed

Again, I'd give it a go just for shitz n giggles, but I just physically can't in the Z, and in my Maxima the pedals are too close as well... (Size 15 shoes)
And since the pedals are severely biased to left, I feel like an ásshole and really uncomfortable half turned in the seat to make it work (maybe that's just me)

Maybe if the pedals were further apart it would be a viable solution... But in day to day driving where there are accidents and we aren't all F1 or professional carting drivers, I think it's a TAD less safe...

Driving with both feet in an automatic????? Always been one of my huge pet peeves I have towards other drivers. You can tell they're driving with both feet because their brake lights are on and off for miles going the same speed. Worse at night! Almost as bad as someone leaving their blinker on! Annoys the hell out of me!

That's like saying: "All ppl that drive yellow cars ((insert random behavior here)) and annoy the Hell outta me." You would have fit right in, here in the Deep South, back in the '60s. ;)

I drive with two feet and don't push on the pedal until I need to brake. No flashing on/off or staying on for miles. Some ppl who use two feet may ride the pedal but not all of us do.

b1adesofcha0s 02-27-2013 01:11 PM

There's a difference between doing something and doing something improperly. You can't say driving with 2 feet is bad based on someone doing it wrong. As we all know, a majority of the drivers on public roads suck at driving whether its with 2 feet or just 1.

Never said ALL ppl who drive with 2 feet have one foot on the brake. I'm sure most don't (I commend you) but it's easily recognizable when someone does drive with 2 when the brake light stays on for miles. Also, I don't know how the "Deep South" views things but I judge on behavior, not looks. I realize yellow is personal preference while there are many negatives about driving with the brake on such as provoking a rear end crash! :tiphat:
