yah, you dont have to take it off. you can also siphon up the oil from the dipstick if you want.

but for me, i use my ramps and im not about to go to the other side of that flapping cover just to drain the oil and make more work for myself.

Same here. I have only done one oil change in the driveway so far--no ramps but on jack stands. It seemed a lot easier to just remove it than to try to wiggle under it.
