370Z Base Speakers

Oh man. was very disappointed when I saw the factory door speakers that come on a base coupe. The magnet about the size of a quarter, and they are labeled Clarion 20 watt. Got some midrange Alpines for around $90, and can't believe the difference. What were you thinking Nissan?

kenchan 01-15-2013 09:17 PM

weight reduction.

actually with the right HU, it can sound pretty good. not hi-fi, but pretty good.

nmjaxx9 01-15-2013 09:25 PM

Stock speakers are good with an aux input, for the cabin area size the sound travels throughout pretty good. Cant complain, plus the bass isnt bad, and I bump the ish out of it with hip-hop. :happydance:

Oh MAN was I ever of the same mind when I got my Z. I came from a Max with a Bose system. While that wasn't the be-all-end-all of car audio, but it was pretty durn good.

The mid range on the base speakers is okay, but that's about it. If you listen to ANYTHING with ANY high end, there's nothing to speak of. Also, there was zero bass. The base speakers in my wife's Altima sounded 10x better. When I bought my Z, I figured I'd wait a while to upgrade the stereo, and just live with it. A $30k car would have to have at least tolerable speakers in it, right?

Nope. I switched that crap out within a month. I got some Infinity Kappas and a Bazooka sub from another member on here. Big difference. I know, Bazooka subs are muddy, blah blah blah. I just REALLY didn't want to consume any storage space. I didn't want it visible in my trunk. And with my HU, I could EQ-out most of the mud.

Trying to install those tweeters is a B though. Ugh.

Nissan was probably thinking, like what I was thinking:

"If I'm going to buy a 370Z, I probably won't care about audio. Most likely, they'll just roll the windows down, smash the gas pedal and listen to the sweet sound of the exhaust".

Yes, for the record, 90% of the time, when I drive, the radio is off, windows down except when it's raining. The other 10% is when I'm driving with my girlfriend, she needs the radio on. :icon14:

Stock speaker need to get broken in, they need to be used to sound the way they should...anyone else notice this when buying brand new? I hated the sound system when i first got the car...couple months later they sound pretty good for my standards.

Masa 01-16-2013 05:40 PM

The first thing I did was replace the HU and speakers with Pioneer and Polk. What a difference indeed.

you can probably get away with a slim active sub under the seat or behind?

JohnsZ 01-17-2013 12:01 PM

I have the Touring model with the Bose (read...not "Base") speakers and it is the best sounding car audio system I have ever had. I have no plans to "upgrade". If I want anything better than this, I will stay home and listen to my stereo system from my recliner!
:tiphat:

Vertigo 01-17-2013 12:05 PM

I think the stock speakers are terrible and upgraded to JL components running off a Kenwood double DIN HU. Night and day difference.

RonRizz 01-17-2013 12:31 PM

Prior to getting my components, I put in my Head unit, amplifiers and sub. I had the stock speakers amped off my soundstream amp, (145 watts each side) with gains set, I was probably feeding them a good, clean 75 watts, crossed at 80hz.
I thought they might last a day, tops. I was very surprised how good they sounded, especiallly after seeing how they were built. I firmly believe that the speakers are adequate, but the source is the problem.
Hard to believe?? Throw an amp on them, and see for yourself.

Haboob 01-17-2013 12:38 PM

If I didn't have to buy a new cell phone (and pay full price) I'd be upgrading my speakers and HU within the month, but alas I must wait.

The sound is just awful. I thought I could be content with it, but no, I can't.

LiquidCrewZ 01-17-2013 12:57 PM

I have a full nav, DD Pioneer Head unit installed in my base car, but you can tell at least the front speakers lack. What are some good options in terms of speakers? Just replace the front two, there are four speakers I think in the base model. Then I'm thinking to get a sub down the line, maybe I can get one of the factory enclosures

Tribalpinoy91 01-17-2013 01:16 PM

There are two speakers in your car with two tweeters. Aka component speakers

kenchan 01-17-2013 01:16 PM

polk has been my favorite. easy to install and sounds good (and inexpensive).

MarkGideon 01-17-2013 01:40 PM

A new Pioneer AVH-X2500BT HU and a set of Polk DB6501 speakers are in transit to my house right now. The Polks seem to be highly recommended here for a good basic system. I am going to have a busy Saturday, but I will be free from my "really pretty good if you only listen to AM talk radio" base system.

I'd like to go back to Alpine as I've always had good luck with Alpine, but they are just astronomical in terms of pricing for a 2DIN.

I haven't decided on speakers yet though.

Kewood DDs are an affordable alternative. I've owned both Alpine and Kenwood DDs and have never had a problem.

I listen to Rush Limbaugh and talk radio. Stock speakers are doing fine for me.

I was thinking something like this Polk Audio 612" Coaxial Loudspeakers with PolyMica Cones Pair DXI650 - Best Buy

Great reviews and if all we have is 20w speakers in the car now. It will blow them away haha.

Would this fit as well?
