2013 Touring/Sport (7 SP) AT - Idiot Proof??

Hi,

I just did a dumb thing with my new 2013 Z. I came around an intersection right turn in "M" mode and forgot I was not in full-auto mode. The trans auto-shifted down to 3RD gear and I punched it. Everything felt great until I ran out of gear and hit the "rev limiter". The strange thing is the "rev limiter" didn't feel like my old 350Z. The motor didn't choke or shut down. It simply held the revs at 7500 and no more. Of course, I backed off quickly and shifted-out and everything seemed OK. Is that motor and AT that idiot proof?? It totally took it in stride. This thing is bullet proof!!

Ken

What?
I don't get it

When I come to a slow turn it will not shift down to 3rd, but when I punch it it will stay in that gear no matter what

If you're saying it then auto shifted into 4th, you got shafted... Because that beauty of THIS AT was that it would stay in whatever gear you wanted...

Personally, if you're not going FI, I think the 7AT is wayyyyy better...

So yeah, it's the motor/ECU/trans

When I dyno'd my car it hit the limiter (speed and revs) and coasted, it was nice

What hes saying is it Did just maintain gear, it Didn't upshift. But the motor didn't get bogged down @ redline. It held the rpms.

Oh, well that's nothing new

I'm glad the OP likes the 7AT

When I saw the thread title, I was expecting an OP about how when you are in full auto mode, but think you're in manual mode, and go to upshift, putting it in neutral... :bowrofl:

VRROOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM  fuuuuu!! screech, shift, pull away ducking head down..

:bowrofl: :roflpuke2:

My point is, I think the logic Nissan built into the 7 SP AT / motor CPU is amazing. It appears that there is no way to accidentally over-rev the motor when pushing the limits of the gears with the paddles. Full throttle acceleration isn't any safer in full-auto mode if the motor CPU logic simply won't let you hurt it shifting with the paddles in "manual" mode. BTW in manual mode the AT will automatically down-shift based on your speed and eventually downshift to 1st gear when you come to a stop.

I only ever downshift down to 3rd. 2nd and 1st gear downshifts are too jerky.

And in doing so we learn of the paradox of Asshole Transference.

:rolleyes::bowrofl:

In any event... Nissan Z engineering rules...

Tribalpinoy91 01-14-2013 11:59 PM

Well if you car was sitting out in the freezing cold for a long while and your event occurred shortly thereafter without proper warm up...

I'd say sir that can't be good. :)

There are better ways to make your presence known to an a$$hole driver Andrew. lol.

The shifting characteristics on our 7AT's is pretty great. Rev matching is more aggressive than the settings they put in the G37's, and it'll hold gears unlike a lot of other paddle shift autos.

I do wish there was idiot proofing for the slip-into-neutral goof though. I've done that a couple times on both cars and my instinct reaction is to put it back into drive. This sucks because the revs are usually still around 5 k when that happens and I get reminded of my mistake by the subsequent jerk. Can't be good for the trans.
