Nice to have a powered nav up and running since the beginning of trip that you don't have to orient in your hands, slide to unlock, and input a pin/gesture to access. Some smartphones, when they lock, need to update location/map-images since before it locked. So, it may take an additional few moments to see that street you needed to turn down, two-three blocks ago, while you were fiddling with your phone. 
But, if you don't plan on upgrading stereo, and don't want to mount a Garmin, and hate folding paper maps, the phone is an alternative.
