Has the carbon fiber fad gone stupid? On par with the hellaflush crowd imo.

Carbon seems to be more aesthetic now days

I don't mind the look but sometimes interiors get over done

SouthArk370Z 12-16-2012 11:25 AM

I'm not a big fan of non-functional CF (eg, covers), but as long as you don't tell me what to do to my car, I'll return the favor. ;)

Agreed, it's now more for looks, and most pieces weigh MORE than OEM, so if the person thinks it'll weigh less, I want to beat them... If they want to do it for looks, do it, no problem

I don't like red CF though, even if the car is red...

forza370z 12-16-2012 11:48 AM

I like it as long as it's not overdo. Same as hellaflush, it's just matter of personal taste. Stupid or not is subjective.

DEpointfive0 12-16-2012 11:49 AM

Oh. And the Hellaflush thing is all sorts or moronic... CF can only get that bad once people put fake CF on their tires and crap

Red looks so bad lol

I don't see the appeal at all.

Then again thats just my oppinion haha

I'd say let people do what they want and let them have fun with what they do. It's a free country.

Hopefully you use Wet Carbon and not Dry Carbon... The chaffing would be unbearable.. :ugh2:

Yes

2011 Nismo#91 12-17-2012 09:44 AM

I voted yes.
I don't care for it, but I see it as just a different color some people like orange some yellow and some CF. What I don't understand is when people pay so much for wet CF when they could have gotten vinyl CF wrap.
But in the end get what you like its your money and your car.

Telephone 12-17-2012 03:10 PM

The look is a total turnoff for me. The CF hoods are god awful. But I guess opinions are like @$$holes.

jcosta79 12-17-2012 03:35 PM

"Real" carbon fiber is not a fad. McLaren and Pagani have been leaders in carbon fiber development for "street" cars, and the stuff they use (especially Pagani) is NOTHING like what you see on your friend's car. Pagani has developed carbo-titanium for use in its chassis which is something nobody else uses (as far as I know).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNuiDEoRgqs

99% of the stuff you see on cars today is junk. The CF parts you see everywhere are heavier than the plastic/metal parts they replace and have less strength as well. This is due to the way the part is made. Most of it is just resin which makes it very heavy and useless. You might as well have made it out of plastic.

I have a carbon/carbon brake pad off a Williams F1 car. The thing weighs next to nothing, even though it's about 3 times as thick as the brake pad on my Z. I also don't think I could break the thing even if I ran over it with a semi. Crazy.

Very good points. I like it for some aesthetic things. I could never afford it if it were useful. Some times people tend to go a little too crazy with it but to each their own. Used moderately I think it can add something to the car that other things cannot

To me this isn't a part of the "fad". The fad has gone to far for wannabes but in the real world its just getting going. There is a big difference as you pointed out.

LunaZ 12-17-2012 05:54 PM

My carbon isn't even carbon... it's vinyl.
I'm such a poseur!!! :rofl2:

SouthArk370Z 12-17-2012 06:10 PM

If it's done for looks, then I say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Who cares whether it saves/adds a few ounces? I think it looks like a fiberglass boat hull without the gel coat, but that's just me.

If it's done to save weight, apparently it's some great stuff ... if you have deep pockets.

I don't see what the big deal is. shrug

TheGreatOne 12-17-2012 07:49 PM

I voted no

I wouldn't call it a fad because its been around for so long...I had a CF hood on my Prelude in 2000....back when people thought it was ugly, some still do.

Besides weight savings I've always liked the look of it. I just find maybe more now the general public knows about CF as they see it in more applications and more car companies are offering it on cars (real or fake)

I just care that its real CF. You can overdo it sure, but I appreciate someone who spends a little money for an original piece or even wrapping.

I love CF, I'd say I have an addiction, but no overkill...especially on the Z, its so classy

On my 40th though, Carbon Fiber is the perfect compliment.

FYI, the 370Z has a Carbon Fiber driveshaft

that isnt taking it far enough, i will not rest until there is at least a carbon fiber fleshlight being made into production :happydance:

@OP kind of 50/50
some want the look, while others want the real deal

i personally would do it for the look, i dont go to the track enough to justify actually real carbon fiber

Sort of its supposedly some sort of plastic with a carbon fibre shell.

jcosta79 12-18-2012 01:42 PM

I will give you an example of what I am talking about:

If you look on E-Bay you can find "carbon fiber" hoods for the 370Z for around $350. I can tell you without even looking at all of them that the hoods are garbage. They weigh more than your stock aluminum hood and are not as strong. They just have a couple layers of carbon fiber matting to achieve the "look" and so that they can legally call it carbon fiber, but the rest is all resin and FRP.

What I don't understand is why someone would buy a hood like this. If it's for looks, just wrap the hood you have now in CF vinyl. (Still gay, but whatever) If you think you are getting a better quality piece because it's "carbon fiber", you are unfortunately very mistaken. The fit and finish of the piece is going to be horrible, the strength is much less than stock and it will be heavier than stock. There is nothing "better" about it versus your stock aluminum hood.

A quality carbon fiber hood would cost around $4K-$5K and will still look and fit like garbage because it will most likely be built for racing. Race car body panels don't "bolt on" and fit like panels built for street cars do, they just don't. They also don't look pretty because they are built for racing and nobody cares. They are likely going to get painted or wrapped and soon after crashed anyway.

My take is, unless you are going racing and spending big dollars on "real" carbon fiber to reduce weight, CF parts are just for show and pretty lame (IMHO).

Top secret says this hood weighs 20lbs less than OEM :tiphat:
