Went to dealer today. Did I do it right?

Went to one of the local dealers today to actually get inside one of these things.

Drove up on the lot and before I step out of my car a salesman is already approaching. Asked if they had any 370z's.

Salesman: Oh yeah, we have two of them. A white one over there and a red one up there on the corner.

Me (politely): I saw the red one when I pulled in, and it's a 350. I'd like to see the 370.

He points me to what appears to be a white base model with Bose but without Navi. The salesman admitted that he knew the asking price on the car but didn't know what options it had. After checking the car out thoroughly, I told him that I didn't want this particular Z but to call me if he could somehow locate what I wanted in next few months.

We made a little small talk (we know a few of the same people), then got down to business.

Told him that I don't NEED a car today, and I can wait for the 2010's if I have to. I wrote down my contact info, exactly what options and colors I wanted (including what invoice is on all that), and what I had for trade in. Wrote my bottom line price on there and told him if he could locate the above for price I had written and give me a decent trade in, he could sell me a car. Says he will have to do some research and see what he can find.

Would anyone have done any different?

What is wrong with you moleman?

I think you did fine. Make them work, not you.

I'd say you did well. It's his job to search and find what you want.

I don't get it... You asked him to find the car you want. He's a car salesman - isn't that what he's supposed to do?

I approach buying in same manner as you had explained.

I arrive at dealership. Type written on paper I have the model, color, options. The total price I am prepared to pay and then my phone number. In and out in 10 min.

I hit every dealership in the area in the same fashion, and call a few out of town

Sometimes I get return calls, sometimes I don't. But I always get my price.

I never go in desperate.

I always go in last couple of days of the month. If no bites I wait another 3 weeks, even if I get calls after the the last day of the month.

I always add in tint.

Good luck

I do the same exact thing. But I write all options down along with car
With both invoice and msrp pricing. And let them kno I won't go over 1%
Invoice.
Another way to get good deals is make e mail offers thru the internet.
I have been very successful in getting no haggle below invoice price quotes.
genesis coupe round here costs 32875 for the top track auto.
I received an internet price of 28446. The invoice on that car is 28,900.
But then I decided to test drive the Z. And the gen never happened.
The Z is a hard car to bargain right now. But by this fall. I'm sure invoice price
Deals will be common as they prepare for 2010 models.

Bit of an update. Turns out my wife knows the owner (they work together occasionally on charity fundraisers etc) of the above mentioned car lot/lots. She called him up on his cell and asked if he could find what I wanted. He says sure thing.

Less than a day later he has one on its way here setup exactly like I wanted. He actually is encouraging me to find someone to help me out with VPP before coming to take delivery!!

ETA- the original sales guy didn't actually end up doing any of the leg work on this, but I think they are going to give him credit for the sale since he technically made "first contact" with me.

LOL. I don't know if I would have been up for a drive back from California. That'd be a hell of a road trip to break the car in though.
