Why the ocassional pause when starting?

I experience the same thing on an intermittent and inconsistent basis. Just push the start button and don't hold the button in. Most the time starts without delay.

I have the bypass harness to isolate the steering lock. In the car today I paid close attention to the start sequence. In my car today and of late as I pay attention, its simply rocket quick.
Hit the button quickly and release today on 2 starts and the car is fully started in less than 2 seconds. I mean its fast. I have felt zero delay since installing the bypass harness. Curious if other harness folks have seen a delay.

Since ppl that have not disabled the SLU are reporting the pause, it would appear that disabling the SLU is not related to the problem.

If disabling the SLU exacerbates the pause peoblem, the harness (or clipping the brown wire) would be the least likely to cause the delay. A computer input is also killed when you pull the fuse.

This problem has been solved by removing the clutch switch and cleaning the contacts with emery paper or a jewellers file. Reassemble the switch, reinstall and you're good to go! No more pause...

I wouldn't be so quick to say this is the fix for this problem. While it may have worked in your situation, not every car with this problem will have "dirty" contacts. Most people report this after removing a fuse. A fuse isn't going affect the cleanliness of your contacts. Also, southark370z doesn't have a clutch.

It's the same switch for automatics. Works in a similar fashion and is susceptible to the same oxidization. And pulling the fuse doesn't create the pause condition at all. Some people notice it about the same time which is merely a coincidence.

And yes. It has fixed the problem. JARblue is working on the solution for pintsizes auto with the same issue. Stay tuned!

The auto uses the same switch to determine brake pedal position.

All I said was I wouldn't be so quick to declare this a fix. With a sample size of 1, your issue fix may be merely a coincidence as well. Your car also had a different issue than just a delay.

I would have loved to have seen your contacts before you cleaned them.

There has been at least three others with this same issue resolved by doing this same thing. The contacts do not need to 'look' dirty to be not making good electrical contact. Mine 'looked' clean. I measured resistance with an ohm meter and found the reading to be anything from open to fluctuating around 75 ohms. After a quick clean with emery paper between the contacts, every connection I tested after that was a dead short and upon re-assembling and testing the car it has not repeated the delay once.
I understand your hesitation to accept this as a solution as it seems too simple, but it is just that. Simple. Try it!

mod installer fixed That's not to say Chris isn't helping - he has certainly provided a good bit of useful info as have you, wheee! - but I happen to live about a mile away from Pintsize and install a most of her mods in exchange for beer She and I both experience the start delay randomly, though hers is more frequent, and she is the one with the occasional experience similar to you where the car just cycles through ACC and ON but won't start. Since she has a 7AT and I have a 6MT, I will pull her brake switch and my clutch switch, clean both, and monitor the results. Hopefully we can get to this in the next few weeks

I have never noticed a "delay" just the standard 1-2 seconds after pushing the button. Most push to start cars have this kind of delay. I always assumed it was the car going from Off, to Acc, to ON which takes a sec. Never really bothered me.

You don't have the delay yet then. No reason to clean the contacts yet!
