They run nitrous systems. Chargers are pretty damn slow, but when the police get a hold of them, they go pretty damn fast. In general they're modified to catch anything traveling up to around 160 (I think all US cars are limited at 155).

All police cars are usually modified to go faster than the variety of chases that can happen. In general they're modified to catch anything traveling up to around 160 (I think all US cars are limited at 155).

I would have to say that the majority of police cars not modified. For the simple reason that one cannot escape the eye in the sky. Why spend money modifying when you can call in a chopper? LAPD for instance does not modify their vehicles anymore.
