Obviously, you never had a OEM navi system.

For one, Nissan is not going to make 2 sets of the Z. One with the clock and one without. They're gonna make the clock for all the Z's, and the Navi is added option.

Second, I have owned several cars with Navi/Tech package. In order to used the Navi, you have to press "ok" every time(It is pain in the butt). After a while, I just stop pressing it if I don't need to use it. Hence, you will not have the clock function. So, the clock up top is functional...IMO.

Additional note. The cars I've own are Toyotas and Acuras. They have 2 clocks and 2 sets of radio/cd player display. Hence, I don't have to turn on the navi if i wanted to used the cd player/radio. I don't know how it will go for the Z in that aspect.

KP technologies makes a bypass modual that allows you not to press the button.

There are always bypass mods for everything including the navi. But in my opinion, it's not worth my time and money to deal with pressing the "ok" button. If i need it, I press the button. If I don't, I do nothing. That's my way of getting around it.

Maybe the 370z has the same thing and it's not just a clock.

Having the digital speedo up in the trio on the dash is a nice cheap heads up display to me. I loved it in my 03.

Im surprised no one has switched that gauge to see what else it can display, or at least I have not seen a thread on it yet. If it doesn't do the digital speedo, im definitely going to mod it so that it does. Very useful up there.

heres a video that shows the different functions of that screen.

I drive a new model G35 with the Navi right now the screen is much more than just a navigation system. The 370z looks like it is the same hardware so I am guessing it will operate in a similar way. All of the radio/status bits work without having to agree to an "ok" screen as well as the voice activated stuff. The "ok" screen only comes up when you enter the interactive menu (like to change setting or reset mileage after a fill up) or when you are actually using the navigation system itself. You can use the steering wheel mounted "enter" button to hit "ok" as well and don't actually have to reach out and touch the screen or center stack buttons. I rarely use anything except the steering wheel controls and most of the time I drive the car I never see the "ok" menu because I don't use the features that require it very often.

I have about 14k miles on the G and I believe the system has a fantastic interface. I see navigation itself as an overpriced, underused option, but all the stuff that comes with it is fantastic. I would gladly pay hundreds for the ipod integration and musicbox system even if there was no navigation. Actually, I seriously wish this was an option. The screen also fills the center stack out nicely and makes the 370z interior look a bit like an Infiniti which most people would consider a good thing.

Hey Ryephile, seen your post over on NAM, so are you converting from MINI too Z :icon17: I just picked up my 370Z last week, need to sell my 07 MINI Cooper S now. I'm loving the Z, but I will miss the MINI, that is a great car.
They are 2 different animals.

That fuel/temp area is interesting... hopefully someone offers a white/clear alternative to those markings. Initially I had a hunch those fuel/temp indicators were part of the LCD segment, and then I thought I was wrong and those were LEDs, but after looking at the car my first hunch was correct. :-P

So changing the LED illumination color will affect the fuel/temp area as well, unless someone puts in tint strips in that area.

Anyhow, I'm waiting for someone to produce a version of the face without the amber/orange font. Perhaps even better is black/carbon faced.

Just kidding [kinda] , but yea a clock would be kind of pointless with a Nav screen.
Maybe switch it out for water temp or oil pressure.

+1
boost gauge
i think the clock gauge is useless when i drive a car i like because i wont feel the time and i dont want to know the time :driving:

Crash 01-11-2009 02:17 PM

+1 for the boost gauge too!

As for the stock navi clock and all that good stuff, that "OK" button by-pass would be fantastic... When I'm driving the M35, every time I want to use the voice command after I just started the car, I have to hit that button. It drives me nuts sometimes. That OK button isn't just for the navi.

Also, I want the bypass so I can use the Aux video input while the car is in motion. I want to hook up my N95 to the video input so I can have my Nokia home screen up.

digging up a old post!
i want to see if there's sumthing to replace the clock gauge thing too..
if only i knew the size for this.. replace it with a defi or sumthing

kdoske 08-02-2009 04:52 PM

guess you could always throw an Air to Fuel ratio gauge in there.....

theDreamer 08-02-2009 05:13 PM

I think an oil temp gauge if you could wire it up to monitor it.
