As much as we may not like gov't involved in so many aspect of our lives, it's a fact taht as societies become more crowded, more complex, more specialization of labor etc, that by necessitly gov't needs to become more involved so that society can continue to exist in a relatively smooth fashion. example: if you lived 200 years ago and grew most of your own food or personally knew the folks who you traded with to get the rest of your food, the FDA doesn't makes sense or is necessary. However, wih the rise of mass produced food, supermarkets etc (more complex civilization) there arises a need to ensure that the food supply is safe since it'snot a reasonable assumption that you can take care of that issue yourself anymore. You can make similar arguemens for the EPA, etc etc. The trick is to try and ensure that the laws/rules that the gov't enforce pass the common sense test so to speak and are fair and just for all levels of society and aren't overreaching in their authority. |
