Coming next week.... The new Cayman and Cayman S, which keep the car's current 987 chassis code, arrive in March with slightly higher base prices of $50,300 and $60,200, respectively.

Until the heads up test, I thought this Car and Driver article was interesting. It matches the Cayman S (old one) against the BMW Z4M. The BMW appears on paper to be a close match to the Z. Check it out....
A quick run through the 3303-pound M-car's gears produces a 0-to-60 time of 4.8 seconds, a quarter-mile time of 13.4 seconds at 105 mph, and a governed top speed of 160 mph. The Cayman S rang in at 4.8 seconds to 60 and posted a slightly quicker quarter-mile time of 13.3 seconds at 107 mph on its way to an ungoverned top speed of 166 mph. 2006 BMW Z4 M Coupe vs. Porsche Cayman S - German Performance/High Performance/Hot Lists/Reviews/Car and Driver - Car And Driver |

Well we gotta apply the same caveat we give the 370z regarding mag times for it. Imho I still expect the Cayman S to be at least a second faster than the 370z around a track and faster in a straight line head to head same day etc.....I hope Im wrong but I dont think I will be. Just thinking realistically with the stats given for both. |

Also, the 320 HP Cayman does not make or apply power any differently than the current Cayman S. It just KEEPS making power up to the higher redline. Thus the 0-60 times will not improve that much per the Motive review. Now, on the track, it may make a difference to the advantage of the Cayman (which is what I am more interested in). Guess we will find out next week. When Nissan aimed to take down the 911s with the GTR, they had a MUCH larger budget and did not 'plan' to make profits on the GTR. With the Z, while they aimed to take down the Cayman, the budget was much less and they intended to make a profit on the Z. Thus, Nissan truly accomplished a HUGE feat if you compare the Z34 to the BMW Z4(M) or the Cayman. Well done Nissan! |

With skidpad numbers of 0.99 (Motortrend), 0.97 (C&D), & 0.97 (R&T) it will be as fast and possibly faster around a track. The same goes for straight line performance--both cars will be within 4.7 - 5.0 secs to 60 between the various car mag reviews. I don't know about you, but I would be pissed off if I spent well over 60k for a Cayman S and be basically on par with the performance of a 30k sports car. And 60k for a Cayman S is the starting price--it can easily get into the 70k-80k range after Porsche options you to death--most of which you will want to have. |

Endgame I think you are mistaking my words as some kind of slight to the 370z thats why you are telling me about the budjet and what Nissan has accomplished. You are preaching to the chior on that one Believe me I know what Nissan has given us but the target has moved with the help of 320hp and a trick gearbox. Kinda changes the equation just a tad but not the accomplishment or value of the 370z. Trust me I love the car just being objective. |

Snakebitten, did not mistake your words. I was just on my soapbox!
The target is always a moving target. Nissan and Porsche will keep outdoing themselves. If Nissan accomplished their target in matching the old Cayman's performance I am good. I still think the Z4 is a better comparison however.. |

Fair enough...Do you mean the Z4 M or just the Z4? BTW I always felt that the regular Z's should be aimed at the base Cayman and the Nismo versions should be aimed at the Cayman S. Makes more logical sense to me and would mean the 370z Nismo would be the Cayman S slayer not the normal 370z etc. So I wont be disappointed "if" the Cayman S beats the 370z. It wouldnt bode well for Porsche if the reg Z beats the S lol. |
