making the switch to a Z, but have a concern

hey guys. i have thought about getting a 370z since 2009. i went with a camaro SS instead. I put a lot of money into my camaro. the car has around 520HP, cammed, full exhaust, intake, dyno tune. suspension mods, lightweight rims, tires etc.. the car sounds WICKED. and the looks to match.

but when i say to my self i would rather have a stock 370z over my modded SS, i know i need to sell it. i am sick of the whole camaro and mustang scene. i hate how they offer v6 and v8s . its just not a true performance car. the car should only have a v8 in it. i hate seeing so many v6 camaros and mustang around driven by non enthusiast. it just bothers me. so i am selling my camaro, and hoping it should cover a used 370z. i think i can get around 25-30 for the camaro.

but heres my concern. i really have never bought a used car before, and also one that has been out for this many years. i am the kind of guy who likes the newest and baddest thing. but as if this moment this is the car i want.

so when is the new Z coming out ? i would like to get at least 2 years out of the car before a new looks comes out.

EndyKwon 10-19-2012 05:55 PM

We wouldn't know, you'd have to ask Nissan HQ or maybe an insider on that.. However, the newest Z that's been out is the 2013, which got a facelift just recently. They offered new things in the existing sport package, such as shocks, red calipers, and new style of rims. Oh, and their front end, they removed the fangs. :( You'll definitely get at least 2 years in my opinion.

And if you do get to find an insider, ask him for some hot stock tips!

gsxr750 10-19-2012 05:55 PM

Just don't buy anything older than a 2012, the previous years tend to have more issues and most seem to have been resolved with the 2012 production run. Definitly stay away from the 2009-2010 yrs.

shadoquad 10-19-2012 05:55 PM

Your guess is as good as mine. This year, they did a cosmetic update on the 370z, front bumper, new wheels, brake calipers, led strips, etc. I would imagine that they'd try and get a few years out of this look, but I don't know. There are rumors about something changing in 2014, but I have no idea.

No changes at all. I got told that in 2020 there will be a 50th anniversary Z

And on the 2014 a new 4 cilinder turbo.

2009-2011 got small fixable issues, nothing to worry about

Only issue I know of that was resolved was that in 2012, they added an oil cooler. Unless I've missed something...

If buying used, either go with a Nissan certified pre-owned or find a private party that has a documented history of the car. Neither of these will offer you 100% assurance that the car won't have any issues but you'll be stacking the deck in your favor this way.

You didn't indicate in your post if you've driven a 370Z yet. I would make that your first priority. When my Z32TT died, I wasn't completely sold on going with a 370Z until after I drove 5 or 6 used ones. Full disclosure: I ended up buying a new '12 but I was very close to picking up a used '11 when the new one with all the features I wanted popped up.

Good luck with the search.

Dave

well i don't care about little problems a car will have. but more about major drive train components. but yes i know what to look for, in terms of getting one that is not beat up. i know what will fail in a car that was driven hard.

again never bought a used car before. i would guess a certified used will cost more in general ?

i am going from a boat of a camrao, a 370z drives great. i have driven one.

mikeSS 10-19-2012 07:11 PM

ya i realize no one will know for sure when the next car will come on. i was looking for some data. which i got thank you.

2014 is something i must look into.

frost 10-19-2012 07:17 PM

Unlike the camaro, the Z isn't something we know about years in advance. I don't think we got a legitimate look at this gen Z until 4-5 months before it came out. :icon17:

LakeShow 10-19-2012 07:22 PM

There's plenty of good used Z's in the for sale section of the forum.

Mr&Mrs 10-19-2012 07:58 PM

Why wait sell the SS, and get into a 370z ASAP. Like you said you will get way more looks in this car then your SS. It will cost a lot more to get the kind of power you were making out of SS with the 370z, but its worth it!

Telephone 10-19-2012 08:55 PM

Test drive a Z first. You might fall I love with your V8 Camaro all over again.

And as for the Z scene, is it any less juvenile than the Camero/Mustang crowd? I actually don't know. I'm a non-scene daily driver who practically ignores other cars. I drive a Z for my own selfish reasons. There are older chaps that drive the Z and could care less about you and your mods. Just FYI.

Base model Z is an awesome value.

I am so over the whole power thing. honestly i put headers and a cam in my camaro for sound reasons. was fine with the stock power.

the car is up for sale as of today on couple sites/forums. looking to have a Z within months.

i plan to keep the 370z stock, as i plan to daily drive it. kind of over the modding thing also. after doing it, it gets real old.

what i plan to do is. rims, springs, cat back.

Mr&Mrs 10-19-2012 10:14 PM

You said your over modding then mention what i plan to do is. rims, springs, cat back

Might as well add a CAI and tune into that list to wake up the midrange power of the car.

what i have grow to hate about mustangs and camaros. is how its such a typical sports car to drive. so many people drive them, and so many are not enthusiast. where to Z people. at least in my area are more of car people. the idea of the v6 mustang and camaro brings in people who just want the look and name. i want a car that people buy for performance. the 370z is just more of what i am looking for.

another point. i know you live in CA. which is import capital of the US. but i live in MI. we rarely see 370z. i am kidding you, again i am serous. i have seen about 12 370zs since 2009. i live in a nice area also.

Mr&Mrs 10-19-2012 10:29 PM

The second you get your Z you will start seeing them everywhere. When we dont drive our Z's we never see any. If we take one out they pop up left and right it seems like lol

nah man. in fact i am hoping to get a Z with a warranty still left on it. do not need to void another warranty. haha

Mr&Mrs 10-19-2012 10:36 PM

I never will because I swear were I live its all BMW, Vettes, Mustang, and Camaros. Never said I didnt agree with you, just that you will probably notice them more once you have one.

m4a1mustang 10-19-2012 10:44 PM

The Z is a great car. I can totally see why you'd want to make the switch.

I had one and loved it.

FWIW, I think I preferred mine when it was stock.

ya i go to GV, i know that side of the state. also with the Detroit side. do you live in GR ?

Jsolo 10-19-2012 11:01 PM

Unless you're really itching for a new/different car or there's something wrong with the camaro, who cares what other people drive.

With all the mods you've done, you're going to end up taking a loss on the deal. Is it really worth it to be in a somewhat more unique car? Around here, I see lots of G's (mostly awd), Z's, camaro's, mustangs, etc... The only thing that bothers me is that most of them are automatics. True enthusiasts drive with 3 pedals, not 2 :)

madwi 10-19-2012 11:06 PM

Yeah, Look for me out at the health center at GVSU, I do some of that offices IT work.

Mr&Mrs 10-19-2012 11:08 PM

Better not say that to GTR owners lol

Automatics have come a long way. RESPECT!

Cmike2780 10-19-2012 11:14 PM

I like the SS, but to me it never seemed anything special, especially with so many Camaros on the road. Maybe I'm bias, but I still like the way the Z looks after nearly 3-1/2 years of owning it.

with what work you got done I would just keep your current car. All that time and dedication put forward to make your camaro that much nicer makes it all the reason to keep it, but if you really like the Z go for it I don't think you will like it because all of the HP your losing.

you do make a good point.

heres is why i think i will like the 370z. i drove my buddies 350z, and loved it. it was fun, i could see out windows, i could take a turn. it wasn't as fast, but power was more useable.

i know i might miss the sound, and power, toqure. but at the end of the day i am just not happy with it anymore.

I had a 350z I loved it very responsive car! Very fun!

You should take an extended test drive.

One thing I can say about the 370z comparing to the previous model 350z I noticed the 370z has a slower throttle response and seems to be a longer car when you sit in it like the hood is too big.
