What RPMs get you the most gas mileage?
 

So I've been keeping an eye on my range icon on my Nismo during daily driving. I thought that lower RPMs (1500-2500) would increase my gas mileage, but it seems like the range increases when I fluctuate around 3,000 RPMs. Anybody else notice any different?

I don't pay attention to MPG....I bought the car to drive it...to have fun in it. I flog it around and refuel it as required...don't pay much attention to the cost of fuel either...the fuel cost is whatever it is per gallon on that day...there is no alternative but to pay it and move on.

Driving while nerding out over some "eco-mode" fuel consumption display is the antithesis of "fun"....to me.....but to each their own, right?

Yeah I bought the car to drive it so I don't pay much attention to the MPG. But I'd guess it's somewhere around 2K-2.5K RPMs.

Probably get into the 3s to get up to speed, then the 2s to cruise. If you keep it in the 2s, you'll never make it up to speed. Over 3.5k, and you're probably pushing just a bit more than necessary to get up to speed. That's what I think from my experiences. I cruise gas conscious when there's traffic or no clear roads since I can't do much anyway, and step on it here and there when there are good opportunities, but being in Southern California does not afford many of those.

City driving absolutely destroys my mileage though.

I too love to rev my car and MPG be damned, but on the freeway in 6th gear, on a long trip, I still do not get what others get, maybe 26. I just can not keep it below 3000 RPM's.

45-60mph in 6th gear will probably net the greatest MPG on a flat surface. Not sure on the exact RPM range for those speeds but the sweet spot feels to be around the 2400 area. At that level you still have enough power to accelerate if you don't want to bother downshifting, but your engine is turning at a relatively slow pace so you are minimizing fuel consumption as well.

0 RPM will get you the absolute best, but that's no fun now, is it? ;)

Best MPG is right at 2000 rpm, in my Altima 2.5.

I don't drive my Z for mileage, but if it helps I am just under 23 mpg with mostly hwy driving.

I was wondering this too, since I DD mine a lot on local streets, but then I saw this online and made me feel worse, since our cars don't go that high :(

I drive at 8,000 rpm I get the best mpg and the best performance out of my car you should try it.

I actually tried it out of curiosity just to see how it acts - this is what I found (for what its worth to whoever is interested): You have to be in the right gear at any speed so as not to load the engine unnecessarily - being in too high a gear at a low speed means you have to press the accelerator down a lot more... which means your mpg will suffer. So, is there a specific rpm for best mpg? No - the secret is being in the right gear (rpm) for the speed you are traveling. If the sound of your engine gets deeper and deeper but you're not going any faster, but maybe getting slower, then your mpg is suffering - downshift... get into a lower gear, and your mpg will increase...

Hope that makes sense...

Having said that, and did that, now I just drive.. to heck with mpg... I drive for the thrill (safely)... :) :driving: :tup:
