Torque (the app)

I searched around the forum and didn't find anything related to this topic, so if its already here please direct me to it and yell at me for being terrible at the internet.

I recently picked up an Android app called Torque that syncs via blue tooth to an OBD2 connector and gives you the ability to do a ton of cool stuff on your phone. Currently I'm using to to notify me when my engine reaches operating temp and read/clear error codes... However I know i'm just scratching the surface of what this app can do.

Is anyone else out there using this app and do you have any nifty tips/tricks that you can pass on to the rest of us?

You can download the app at:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...l.torque&hl=en

I'm using this for my OBD2 connector with blue tooth.. thus far the thing has worked perfectly:

I use this app, and i measure a lot of different things. do you have the free or pay version?

EDIT: here is my review of OBDlink MX + Torque Pro http://www.the370z.com/exterior-inte...ml#post1502212

dastaco 10-07-2012 04:40 PM

I have the pay version.

well then you have the full feature set, I listed off the features in my review but to summarize some of the most useful I have found are AFR ratio, coolant temps, intake air temperature, 0-60 times, data logging the most useful. and I use the video app for torque that allows you to overlay any gauges over of the video.

It's a feature rich app. You can create custom PID's but you will have to search how to. I use the preprogrammed ones and have had good results. while at WOT i like to see AFR, revs, coolant temps, IAT on one screen. Another useful thing to track would be timing.

Are you running this on a phone or laptop? I'm currently running my on my phone which makes it impossible to view while driving (I don't have a phone mount).

I run Torque on the Phone and OBDwiz on the laptop when I want to really get hardcore. Get a cheap phone mount on Amazon ($15)

also, hope you're phone screen is large. I have 4.5"

Its not that large, I'm thinking about running it on an android tablet that I have... though mounting that would be a pain in the butt. Have you found any additional plugins that you found helpful? I downloaded an engine knock plugin just in case since you can use this thing on any car with an OBD2 port.

marrim 10-07-2012 05:25 PM

I also use this app. I have it on my droid razr with the car dock. The car doc is placed top left corner of the windshield. Power line runs under dash and up the inside of the A pillar. The only thing I have problems with is I also run pandora. Torque uses so much bluetooth bandwith that pandora skips. So for now I have to choose play music with no car data or car data and some other form of music.

Just the video recording pluggin and the data logging one.

I just got this setup and I've been playing with it a lot. Is there no fuel pressure readout on the 370?

Also, anyone know how accurate the 0-60 times are? When I do try it, I also have speed and RPM gauges on the screen and it takes them awhile to update so I can't time it by video.

I don't think the Z ecu measures fuel pressure, or maybe it's a custom PID. Would have to search that.

As far as accuracy, it's related to your refresh rate which is directly related to the OBD2 bluetooth dongle you have plugged in. I have one of the more advanced models (OBDLink MX) so refresh rates are just about instant, providing pretty spot on data.

here is a list of the adapters: Bluetooth Adapters - Torque OBD2 Wiki

Jsolo 10-07-2012 10:58 PM

Speaking of custom PID's, what have folks discovered?

well here is the problem, to see what each manufacturers custom PID set is you must pay thousands of dollars. There are about 40 universally shared PID's that are all the basics on an app like torque. but there are probably 100's of non-standard PID's.

Here is a good reference for PID help: OBD-II PIDs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rumor is the developer of Torque is getting the cutoms PIDs specific to Nissan and will eventually release an update, but it's still just a rumor. :ugh2:

It's interesting because virtually everything can be logged/monitored such ABS cycles, VDC, etc.

Alstann 10-08-2012 12:20 AM

Do you guys know if the AFR measured gauge is accurate? I also use the app, and I know that during open loop (full throttle), ECU's just use a fuel table and avoid using the narrowband sensors and don't read AFR (at least on other cars I have worked on). Correct me if I am wrong!

I don't own an AFR gauge so I wouldn't really be able to tell.

I started running this a week ago. I'm very satisfied so far. I've been playing around with creating my own dials. Here's my setup on a Samsung Galaxy2 7inch

dastaco 10-23-2012 10:15 PM

What are you doing to stick your tablet onto your dash? Also, is anyone using the live log upload feature? If so, are you doing anything specific with the data?

cheshirecat 10-24-2012 10:09 AM

I have a similar setup. Using the higher-end Kiwi BT adapter. Update rate is pretty quick.

http://i.imgur.com/mNCwy.jpg

my mounting setup basically consists of a piece of wood wrapped in dinoc with some 3m dual-lock (it's like velcro but hardcore). I have to reshape the mount a bit so that the tablet fits more flush but it's working for now.

tablet is a htc flyer. 7'' wifi tethered to my galaxy nexus (which is on a car mount for power). using tasker to automate but running into a few glitches that i need to work out.

dastaco 10-24-2012 11:05 AM

Would you mind showing the actual mount that you've built? I'm trying to think of a good way to do this without using double sided tape/velco.

jetguy 10-24-2012 11:22 AM

how is the lag on the app compared to your real tach?

cheshirecat 10-24-2012 11:28 AM

about a quarter of a second behind. it's fast. the more dials you have open, the longer they take to update- each one will pulse with a little green light as they update.

don't cheap out on the bluetooth adapter- that's the most important part when it comes to update rate.

as far as the mount, no pics yet, its pretty ugly. basically its just a piece of wood mounted with a few screws through the bottom of the plastic and then wrapped with di-noc. even then, it's pretty ugly. luckily, it's either covered by the tablet via the dual-lock fastener or by the door which is secured the same way.

Vicster 10-24-2012 12:55 PM

Guys, is there an iOS version or similar app available? This definitely looks quite useful.

Yes there is but requires the ODBII to WiFii. The BT adapter will not work.

cheshirecat 10-24-2012 01:27 PM

Torque is android only, but there's a similar app called "rev" for iphone. Not too sure of an ipad equivalent.

:iagree: I have an obdlink mx and the refresh rate on That One is virtually instant. I think it's 4x speed of the kiwi product. if you cheap out and buy the inexpensive ones like the elm scanners for $20 you will have slower refresh rates. additionally more expensive ones can handle more pids/second without slowing down.

For anyone that isn't currently doing so, I highly recommend setting up Torque to send your logs to the torque webserver. It uses google maps to show your drive routes and overlays any/all data that you set it to record. This allows you to go back and see exactly what your car is doing on any given drive, insanely cool.

If anyone wants to set this up and runs into issues let me know, I should be able to walk you through the setup process (its not tough though)

I pulled the dash out, pulled the cubby box out and took the door off. Put a tablet protective cover (from Best buy, $40) on the face of the cubby box, wrapped vinyl around the box and mounted everything back in place. I thought I had something cool...and then I see cheshirecat. Damn, that's nice.

I have Tasker running on the tablet (Samsung Galaxy 2 7inch). It customizes the sh!t out of your tablet and lets it basically automate itself.

It's late and I'm drunk. I'll post my pics tomorrow in the DIY section.

wstar 10-26-2012 01:18 AM

There's a number of hidden PIDs it would be useful to find for our cars. The ones that e.g. Nissan's dealership-only Consult-III tool or sometimes Cipher can see but default scanners like Torque can't. The big ones on my list: 7AT fluid temp from the TCM (used to set fill level properly - even Cipher doesn't have this last I checked), Oil Temp (it's in there somewhere...), and Brake Pedal Position (for track data logging. I've seen one proprietary data logger that can supposedly pull this from our car, so I think the PID is out there...).

I tried running TorqueScan, but honestly I've never let it run through its full range, just takes too damn long...

I also checked the link from the guy who started this thread on the one from amazon and they look the same and pricing the same..

dastaco 11-05-2012 08:14 PM

Do you get any flashing lights on your obd2 adapter and can your phone pair with the device over Bluetooth?

mardigras 11-05-2012 08:48 PM

There are No lights on that obdII and it never connected. Iam about to purchase the obd II you posted up from amazon if your sure I wont have any issues?? Thanks for the help btw...

dastaco 11-05-2012 08:53 PM

The adapter I've been using is still going strong. Sorry your first one didn't work for you.

mardigras 11-05-2012 08:56 PM

Well at this point Iam going to pull the trigger and purchase the one your using.. I cant thank you enough for the support.. THANKS, this forum Rocks!!!

mardigras 11-08-2012 05:16 PM

Well I hate to say it but after ordering the unit you posted up it seems that one doesnt work either.. I now have 2 obd's and have paid for this app and cant get it to work. My bluetooth on my phone will not reconize it for some reason.. @#$%^&*()

mardigras 11-08-2012 05:34 PM

Ok after looking closer at it while plugged in to my 2010 z there are No lights lit up on the obd II.. My z is a touring but I wouldnt think my computer input would be different than other z's... Any ideas??

mardigras 11-08-2012 07:26 PM

Ok turns out the Fuse was blown and not allowing power to get to the obd II.. For anyone else having related problems, Check the Fuse!!!!

Glad you got it working. Make sure and post on here if you find any cool new features that you're using.

I'm trying to think of a way to use the web logging feature for us to compile data on different cars. I think we should be able to see variances in intake temp, HP/Torque at RPMS, etc based on car mods. Still trying to think it through though.
