More power after 3K miles
I'm a little over 3000 miles on my DD Z and I feel like the engine has more power and better acceleration now than it did when I first purchased it. Is it all in my mind or did the engine just need a little breaking in? Has anyone else felt this?

Most engines have more hp at 20,000 than they do at 2000. Parts just need to get broken in. I.e. piston rings properly seated with cylinder walls, trans loosens up, etc...

Any chance you have dyno evidence of this? I could see it being true but I'd need hard numbers to truly believe it.

i dont think anyone would want to dyno their car during the breakin period.

I agree, I do feel more power with time.

I think the more you drive the more in love you get with the Z. This car has soul!

This is my 3rd Z car. I have felt it in my first 2 cars that I had more power after around 3K miles (especially after my first oil change).
My latest Z is already modded and has been dyno tuned and it doesn't even have 700 miles on it yet. So if I feel a difference in power again with this car after 3K miles, I will really know that it's not just me. My other new cars were not like this, only my Z's.

What's a break-in period?

2. If anything, now that we are forced to buy fuel with 10% Ethanol in it, the power potential of fuel should be worse than a few years ago.

and as far as getting louder, on my 2011 at first it was, but once i passed 20k on my mileage things seem to be smoothing out now especially at the higher RPM's....oh and just so everyone knows i took my throttle bodies off this last weekend and discovered that they had a nice ring of dried up oil that was making the butterfly valves stick in place so in case anyone gets up to around 20k or so it would probably be a good idea to get some throttle body cleaner in there and clean the throttle bodies out. |
