Modern cars all have knock detection, precisely because the OEMs know people may put lower octane gas in their cars, either by mistake or necessity. Drive as normal. The car will adjust ignition timing to compensate, resulting in lower hp and mpg than normal, but no damage.

Don't put weird, cheap octane booster in your car. You'll do more damage than just running on regular low octane pump gas.

You know, the owners manual actually tells you what to do if this happens.

I think you should drive like a human, drive on the tank, then when you fill up next, disconnect your battery and wait about an hour or so to reset the computer
Why is it every time I see someone recommend resetting an ECU the time "requirement" keeps going up? An hour is just ridiculous, 15 seconds is all it takes to reset ANY processor. It's not like you have to bore the ECU to death with no power for it to reset.

I saw a silver Nismo on Victory in Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks whatever... I smelled 87 when I drove by it... tisk tisk...

This - and also read the manual before dumping it here and telling us how you couldnt street race. Note - improve your driving skills before adding another mod to your car. Street racing AINT the way to do it. No sympathy.

Default Straight From the 2012 Manual (Section 9 Page 4)

FUEL RECOMMENDATION

VQ37VHR engine

Use unleaded premium gasoline with an octane
rating of at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index)
number (Research octane number 96).

If premium gasoline is not available, unleaded
regular gasoline with an octane rating of 87 AKI
number (Research octane number 91) may be
temporarily used, but only under the following
precautions:

. Have the fuel tank filled only partially with
unleaded regular gasoline, and fill up with
unleaded premium gasoline as soon as
possible.

. Avoid full throttle driving and abrupt acceleration.

However, for maximum vehicle performance,
the use of unleaded premium
gasoline is recommended.

Thank you! Probably the most valuable comment in this entire thread. Who would have thought the owners manual would have had something valuable in it aside from showing you how to use your seatbelt and operate cruise control?

The OM is full of valuable information. A lot of folks in here need to take an hour off from driving their Z and RTFM and for some others, have their mom read it to them at bed time.

Just drive it. You could have put 87 in your Gixxer which has higher compression and it would still be okay.
