Oil temps
I live in Austin, TX and drive my 09 370z daily. I inquired at Uprev tuners about tuning my car and they told me the first thing to do is install an oil cooler. (They are doing it) I drive on the street spirited and am just not sure if the $800 (i'm not mechanically inclined) is worth it. Today the outside temp was 85 and after 15 minutes of driving my oil was 220. At 180 the Z is a rocket but at 220 it hesitates so just trying to see if any others have done this and felt it was worth the $$$?

If you're only hitting 220, you don't really need one. Save your cash and put it towards an exhaust or intake.

I asked the guy and he took me back to the difference from 180 oil temps to 220. At 180 the car takes off, at 220 it sucks air for a couple seconds and then goes but nothing like 180. He told me they can keep the temps under 200 easy year round. maybe he is selling me a bill of goods but I really notice the difference in oil temps and performance.

Get the oil cooler especially for when temps go up in Texas. Gets to 120F there doesn't it? Wait for a warm day, >80F, drive the car hard for 10 minutes and you'll probably find out you want it. Be careful if you haven't upgraded your brake pads and fluid. I'd expect them to fail in less than as 15 minutes if your really pushing it. Full Throttle / Full Brakes type driving.

I hit almost 260f on a weekly basis in ~80*f outside temp. 3-4 good pullls and the temp rises drastically. Have to let it cool down for a while with the hood open to vent before going at it again. Have yet to hit the first stage of limp mode yet...

Answer me this question, are you going to be tracking your car? If not, I don't see the need for a $800 oil cooler. Put some good synthetic oil, maybe a slightly larger than stock oil filter and cruising at 220 isn't a bad thing. It won't harm your engine. I drive 220 all the time, it's fine. AND some of these new engines actually LIKE to run a little hot. But this topic will blow up if discussed in depth (and possible closure of the thread). So, my suggestion will be NO cooler if you don't track. Thanks

I have the cooler but only for occasional tracking or events... Before i installed it, I tracked my car track hard for 20 minutes and only saw 250 degrees. I was @ 6100 miles when i did it 3 months ago on a 83 degree morning. The VQ runs much hotter while being broken in. Wait till 5k miles to know where you are really at with oil temps. I doubt you will need it as a DD. And unless you're running more than 5 laps on a fairly long complex track? You may or may not need it depending on the weather the day you track. Don't be afraid to get up to 260 degrees a few times after broken in to see how your car reacts to stress... You can only get some advice here. Put your car through the ringer without mods to know your individual needs and improve them from there... Lastly, some of that hesitation can be resolved with an intake. An oil cooler for our Z is extremely easy to install. You should just pick one up from Stillen or Z1 or AAM for like $500 plus or minus $100, installation is super straight forward, you literally can't mess up.
And YES, oil cooler is worth it. |

Totally worth it ESPECIALLY if you ever plan to track it....my '09 hit the high oil temps and went into limp mode sucks having to limp it off the track while others still go at it.
