Next Mod: Performance...need help

Hey guys- I'm getting ready to spend some money on my next performance mod.

Keep in mind that due to my warranty I cannot get a tune!!!!.

Mod wise only think I have done is GTHAUS full CB exhaust.

I hit 290 on dyno and looking to get more power for next time!!!!

What would you guys do for my next mod to get what Im looking for.

Remember, I cannot get a tune so I know that eliminates a few things.

Thanks again!!!!

most dealerships would never notice if you got your car tuned unless your engine completely blows up  if it's tuned correctly, that shouldn't happen unless you just flat out abuse your car in which case they would void your warranty anyway. custom dyno tuning is one of the best things you can do for your car, though it is wise to wait till you have all the mods you want to do first. cold air intake, high flow cats and exhaust along with a tune will get you the best results.

I would not risk a tune before warranty is over. If there's even a chance of detection, and somehow a warranty issue arises, you're screwed.

i got a new trans under warranty with a tune and tp's (2 things dealers flip out about). don't be afraid to throw a tune on. the great thing about it, is u can remove it before u take it in for service

HKYStormFront 09-04-2012 10:53 AM

yea my dealership in anderson said they wouldn't have voided any kind of warranty repair unless it was specifically related to the pistons for tuning. anything else would have been covered. if it's tuned right, there's nothing to fear as long as you are on good terms with your dealership.

jlbrenne 09-04-2012 10:53 AM

I'm honestly thinking HFC's would go quite good with my GTHAUS setup. However, I dont want it much louder :)

I think that would give me the best bang for my buck right now.

Then, intake...then the tune!!!

This totally depends on the dealership.

Some dealerships will void your warranty over something as silly as intakes, but at least with intakes, I can take them out of the car in 30 minutes and not have to spend another couple hundy for a re-tune.

Consider talking to your dealership. I'm out of warranty so I have no worries about much anything.

A friend of mine owns a G37 and talked to three dealers, who all told him different things, that a tune voids warranty, that even an intake voids warranty, that if you touch the the car with the back of your hand directly below the driver's side door handle while the window is three-quarters closed with the stereo playing that you'll void your warranty...

the person who tunes your car should have your stock rom file and should be able to save your tuned rom. so swapping back and forth should take about 10 min

also, the above post states what everyone on here needs to read

Thats AWESOME...Thanks guys!!!!!

HKYStormFront 09-05-2012 08:32 AM

yea i run my truck on the "stock" map 99% of the time and switch over to the "performance" map when i want the extra power. i asked the dealership about that and they said that it was unlikely any tech's would notice the uprev software unless they knew specifically to look for it as long as it came in with the stock map selected.

I'd still rather avoid that for the first 36mo/36k mi or whatever. When warranty is gone, it's time to play, but that's just how I'm doing my mods. Do whatever you all want. I'd rather not get bent over a barrel over a light power mod.

ProfessorDave 09-05-2012 02:52 PM

I'd think you'd want a CAI next, especially with a tune planned down the road.

People often forget LESS is MORE. Less Weight that is.
Switching seats out saves weight, there is a whole list of weight savings you can do. None of which will need you to do a tune if you are opposed to doing that.

A tune is actually a great mod. Your vehicle's engine is controlled by a computer, the ECU. A "tune" gives the ECU a newer image which opens the engine up for more power and quicker response. A stock ECU tune is geared for some performance, but also for engine efficiency and reliability. An aftermarket tune can improve performance.

Usually, a reputable garage performs dyno tests to calculate hp gains vs. stock.

They used to refer to this as "chipping" a car as well, because unless I'm mistaken, one used to literally replace a chip in the vehicle. Now it's all software through the OBD-II, if I'm correct.

ahh icic..yeah i'm familiar with reflashing an ecu and "chipping" from the ricer days lol. awesome info! thanks

HKYStormFront 09-06-2012 07:31 AM

yea in the EPROM days, you had to change the actual chip, 300zx's were that way. but now the stock ECU can be flashed and retuned. the way i always explain it is that when nissan tunes the stock car, they have to tune it so that it will run in the middle of a desert, at the top of mt everest, and at the north pole all on the same tune while running off gasoline with quality so poor, you could relabel it coca-cola and last at least 60k miles without destroying itself. running the fuel you usually get in your area and tuning it on a dyno allows them to open up the constraints to get more power out of it and get it running more efficient for the fuel you use. typically you get more power and your fuel mileage either stays the same or in some cases goes up slightly... after you get done with your 40-100mph pulls the first week that is

Your absolutely right. I'm getting my BERK HFC's first...then Stillen CAI...then shortly after that a tune (that will be the last thing that I do internally for performance)..I will work on exterior next. Probably trying to lighten things up just a bit but not going crazy.

HKYStormFront 09-06-2012 08:21 AM

just to give you a reference, my only performance mod right now is a true dual exhaust on my frontier and i had jon@z1 tune my truck with uprev. i gained 11hp and 22ft-lbs. but the big gains were all the way across the curve with 20-30ft-lbs consistently across the mid range in the meat of the rpms. this is where you can improve your fuel mileage depending on what rpms you usually cruise at
