I think it's a valid point that BanningZ makes. Hyundai has brought the Genesis Coupe to market precisely because they feel there IS a market for the car, and I think they are correct. There are plenty of folks who will take one look at the price vs. equipment, give a low whistle, and head into the Hyundai showroom. They won't mind the derivative styling, or the gap in performance to (among other cars) the Z. They will enjoy the big savings in cost and the warranty. Well, they will until they see the depreciation.

RWD, 300+hp, good looking car starting at 23k? I cant see how this will fail for Hyundai. I wouldnt buy one over the 370z but I sure as hell would buy it over any of the FWD sporty coupes out there now like the Altima or Accord coupes...I think Hyundai has a winner here...In this economy this car makes perfect sense imho...

Don't forget,
If you look at the 2.0T option... You have a 6speed RWD coupe with the same block as the Evo; 4B11. Not to mention that Hyundai has already said it will handle over 29lbs of boost. Granted that is a blanket statement as we don't know whether its 29lbs out of a 14b mitsu turbo or a GT35R. BUUUTTT the fact that Hyundai is touting that it's a machine that is meant to be upgraded is good enough in my eyes.(It has all forged internals) This will become the next "Mustang" of the import world. Cheap, Fast "reliable" power. The R-spec 2.0T will have Brembo 14inch brakes with 4-pot calipers all the way round, stiffer suspension, bigger wheels....etc..etc... The Gen Coupe will hold its own. Personally I'd take the Z as I'm sure its a much more refined daily driver, but if I was looking for a drag strip monster that could get me to work..I think the 2.0T would fit the bill. The Z is a great car for what it is, YET if you don't have the cash for a Z then Hyundai has made a car that will get you into a 2 door, RWD 6speed coupe, for less. I feel they are in two different classes. If one is looking at the new Civic SI or GTI or Altima Coupe, they might swing by Hyundai and look at the Gen Coupe. BUT if your looking at an Rx8 or Charger/Mustang then you will find folks looking into the Z. This might sound repetitive but you kinda have this "niche" that the Z falls into. Its above the Gen Coupe, but it's not quite Porsche Cayman material, but its cheaper then a vette, and although you think the Rx8 handles nice you can't get over the fact that its powerless...so you find yourself at the Z. Catch my drift? Last edited by Pianoman; 12-08-2008 at 07:51 PM. |

Back to topic. These days, I see Hyundai as a replica maker. Just like some of you have said about the accords, corollas, and jettas. Hyundai just make their replica version and charge less. Quality wise...still not as good as the original ones. Sometimes its pretty decent, and sometimes its down the gutter. Will there be a market? Yes. I believed it will appealed to the buyers where numbers/specs per dollar ratio have a higher priority. Now I will never rule out any makers for eternity. Things can change and who knows whats gonna happen in 10 or 20 years. Until they proven otherwise, Hyundai will not be on my list along with domestic in the near future. |

Its too bad we didn't have forums in '69 so we could go back and read essentially what is written here about the Genesis. Look at the 240Z - wasn't it about half the price of the Corvette and close to the same performance. They copied a lot of different cars to come up with 240Z... it was smart - take the best bits of a few cars and make your own. FWD though.... ewwww..... |

Guys, this is not 20 years ago Hyundai. For the last +15 years they have been going through rigorous re-engineering of their operations and management, and the result has been showing up in their reliability, quality, and designs.
They just won Ward's Auto 2009 Ten Top Engine of the world, Ward's Auto declares Ten Best Engines of 2009 - Autoblog, And for the last 10+ years, Hyundai has been rated above the average reliability and quality in the car industry, they are acutually better than Infinity and Nissan. And here are some pictures of Hyundai Genesis Coupe in South Korea... |

You can't compare a genesis to a 370z, the genesis is 10k cheaper and japanese motoring is much superior.
The same comparision will be made placing the 370z to a BMW 335Ci, the Z is 10K cheaper and german motoring is far more superior. (And i am not talking about lap times or the usual 0-60 crap). Bring it on bitches..... the Stig Edit>- Someone hacked my laptop and wrote that. i wanted to delete but i want to know what do you guys think. |
