I do own 3 properties that i am renting out, my parents tell me property is the way to go, cars are just toys and a waste of money. If you have the money to spare then its all good but if you are in a position to put the money into buying property or a sports car, choose the property every time.

Here in australia we were not effected by the housing market drop like you guys in america are.

i dont see what the big deal is about living with parents and having a $35k car...

some young people have jobs where they have to drive clients around. a lot of people i grew up with didnt have to give their parents a dollar to live at home. if this were my case, i'd have an extra $40k or so in the bank. not everyone had their college paid for. i'm house shopping now but there's no way i could do that at 18. not that much of my action happens at home, but my parents are VERY cool anyway.

sure i couldve gone with a cheap car with the $22k i put down, maybe a yaris and save me a good $8-10k or a used car cheaper. my priorities must be all over the place. i chose to get a nice car and be happy knowing the house would come in a few months than own a p.o.s. and be depressed on the way to work. im 22, if it matters.

I own my residence here "up north" since 1978 and a condo in Florida since 1988. They are hedges against inflation and have been good investments, though that's not why I bought them. Still and all, I wish I would have sold the condo a few years back before the bubble burst.

Its about priorities. Most people will make living on their own a higher priority than a car. Not to mention, a lot of parents probably wouldnt be too happy with their kid saving up money to blow it on a car instead of moving out and starting their life.

I love my parents and they were always respectful when I lived at home but there is nothing like living on your own. Wasnt too much fun having my girlfriend come over and sleep in the same bed I grew up in with my parents right down the hall...

I own a home, bought it in 08, my mortgage, tax and insurance is slightly more than renting here, but once you include the tax deductions its pretty much even. I'm trying to save up for a second home. Hopefully the market stays flat for a while. (most likely it will).

Just bought my second house, renting out the first. Probably will pick one up each time I move (every 3-4 years or so) if all goes well, and then roll those properties into the house my wife and I will retire in. Perhaps a little townhome or something at our favorite ski resort too.

Concerning the whole living with the folks vs living on your own thing: everyone's situation is different, and I would never presume to know what is right for anyone else based on posts here. What I do know is this: I've been living away from my parents since I was married at 20. I'm now 29. Has it been difficult at times? Hell yes. Would I have wanted to stay with my parents instead? Not in a million years. Why? It's not because my parents were hard to get along with, quite the opposite, they were awesome and did much to set me up for success during my formative years. Nope, it's because I relish being independent, an adult in the truest sense of the word, and would have seen it as a defeat if I had stayed home with the parents even before I was married. My wife and I could have stayed on, even as we were both going to college, until 'we got on our feet'. But it wouldn't have been the same. I felt I had taken enough from them as it was and it was time to make my own way in the world.

The Z is on hold for the moment, but my S4 keeps things interesting enough for the time being.

S.

Kinda sounds like you werent too respectful towards your parents by having GF stay there and having sex. As a parent I dont want my sons GF staying the night. You might end up like the Sara Palin daugther scandel.

Hell.. I'm 17, still in high school and taking college classes. I wont be embarrassed when I'm living with my parents at 21, because it's that much simpler for me to attend University of Arkansas from home, than it is to go and have my own rent to worry about.

I think living with parents is also a cultural thing, typically in an asian (for me filipino) family it is accepted often encouraged for the kids to live with parents while they save to buy their own place. My parents did this when they were younger, of course they just came from the Philippines with practically nothing, so they had to start somewhere. Also as the parents get older (really old), the tables turn and the parents end up living with their children. It may be economical in a way, but its also very accepted in the Filipino culture.

BTW. I didn't follow the norm.. I moved out when i started college, found a job here and have been living on my own with the wife ever since.

I've been a homeowner since I was 19 ( 8 years ago) Me and my boyfriend bought a cheap azz $60k house and remodeled it head to toe. My house looks awesome now and my car payment is higher than my mortgage haha
