No... if anything they now have to pay for your tow, too (they would most certainly try to get out of it before the recall). I am confused a little though... you said you cut the brown wire and removed the fuse after it failed? Neither of those solutions work after the failure; they are preemptive solutions. Beat on the sucker a bit and see if you can't get the car to turn on (put back the fuse and reconnect the wire first). Then once the car is on, remove the fuse.

Exclamation Steering Lock control units - Nissan responds!

Wanted to make sure anyone in this thread also gets a look at this letter I received in the mail today. It's worth a shot even if your vehicle is not an Altima. Keep filing complaints and calling and also try filling out this reimbursement claim form. Link in the picture.

I wouldn't waste time to solder it... just connect it back and electrical tape. If you can get the car to ACC (or ON - don't need engine running), pull the fuse. Then it won't matter about the brown wire. If you take to the dealer, they'll fix it regardless.

Can't I just sue Nissan if it malfunctions and cause an accident?

I suppose you could but the chances of the ESCL/SLU causing an accident are pretty close to zero. Your survivors may be able to sue after you get stranded in the desert or a blizzard and die from exposure.

Exclamation Side effects of pulling the fuse

I kinda want to start a new thread, but I guess I will just post it here first. Does anyone have had any side effects after pulling the fuse? I've read someone has mentioned the delay of the engine start. And that's what happened to me too after I pulled the fuse. It's not every time, but once in a while it happens. Also, I store my car during the winter. I don't disconnect the battery. It usually last 3 weeks. But the week I pulled steering wheel lock fuse, the battery died COMPLETELY(can't even open the door by push the button) in one week. I kinda doubt after I shut off the car, the computer system keeps sending the signal to the SLU to lock the steering wheel and don't get any response thus consume the battery... But this only happened the first week I pulled the fuse. It could be random. Besides those, I don't have any other issues after puling the fuse. Anyone here has other problems after pulling the fuse?

Cut the wire or pull the fuse will NOT resolve the problem. They are rather the solutions to prevent the problem to happen in the first place.

Forza, I definitely experienced the delayed start a few times since pulling it 6 months ago (maybe 3-4 times total). Other than that, zero issues for me. In fact, my ESCL has yet to fail and leave me stranded somewhere

The delay on start does not appear to be caused by disabling the SLU - it also happens to ppl who have not disabled the SLU.

From what I've been able to figure out, the SLU is only polled during startup (and possibly shutdown) so it shouldn't be a drain when the car is off. But I'm not 100% sure about this.
I suspect a bad/weak battery (check the electrolyte level) or a parasitic load (have you added anything, eg, radio, that might be pulling a load when the car is off?).

I pulled my fuse some time back and have had no problems.

Yea I only have this delayed start AFTER I pulled fuse. I will put it back on and see if that happens again.

And SouthArk, yes I do have lots of stuff connected to the battery, like capacitor and LoJack... That's why my battery doesn't last long if I don't drive the car. And plus the week I pulled fuse was super cold. So that one time incident could just be random.

AFAIK there haven't been any reported SLU failures while the car has been started.

And good luck with that "sue Nissan" thing...

My z was one of the z's who had problems with the steering wheel lock. Went to Nissan and got it changed.

I haven't pulled the fuse, but I had the battery COMPLETELY die after leaving the car in the garage for 8 days while I was in Jamaica (fun!). I have no idea what killed it (2 year old battery). I thought everything was shut off. Someone on here mentioned that the radio potentially could have drained it. I do have an aftermarket stereo installed. I just wanted to mention this to keep the idea open that it may NOT be related to you pulling the fuse...
