Undecided for my next mod!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am torn right about now... I am usually 100% confident on all my mods but not sure about this one.
I bought and have in my possession Stillen Canards. I am not 100% sure whether or not I want to install them. The problem is that all the mods I have done, I can remove and go back to stock if I ever decide to sell the car. But with the Canards, it requires me to actually drill holes to the front of my bumper. So if I install them, its not an easy fix to remove them later on. I placed the Canards to my bumper by hand it it looks awesome but I am not too sure. What do you guys think about the Stillen Canards? Should I leave them black or color match them? |
Canards look pretty ricey to me unless you are a serious tracker who is chasing fractions of a second there. That is just my opinion, though. I would be pretty reluctant to drill them in as well. You cna probably leave them black if you do put them on though.
|
well I don't think you have to track your car to take advantage of the downforce the canards provide. You can taken advantage of it just driving at highway speeds. but I appreciate your input :) Leaning towards leaving them black if anything.
|
I think if you like them you should just drill em on. Worst case scenario you swap front bumpers in the future to revert to stock with someone who wants the canards.

RE: its not an easy fix to remove them later on. I do not like them enough to install but if you do, you can buy a new bumper if this effects sale price later. |
I am another person that against canards, especially on a Z. It might look good and aggressive on evos but thy dont go well with the lines of the Z.
But it is totally based on personal reference though |
one of my friends had a 1st gen xterra and was all excited about buying the ARB snorkel for it when it became available years ago. he had a big party and a bunch of his xterra buddies came over to help him install it. to do so required cutting a pretty sizeable chuck out of the front driver's side fender. they measured multiple times and taped it off correctly. however, when it came time to pull out the cutting wheel, my friend just couldn't bring himself to do it. one of his more bombastic buddies at the mod-party abruptly said "hey! what the hell is that?!!" and pointed off in the distance. everyone turned to look, including the owner, and quickly the guy grabbed the cutting wheel, flicked it on and made a slice across the area to be trimmed. my friend looked back, shrugged and said "oh well, i guess we have to do it now". my point is, maybe you just need someone to push you over the edge. discussing it on a forum isn't going to change much.
having said all of this... imo, unless you have a big *** carbon wing on the back and huge carbon diffuser on the front, the canards are going to look out of place |
Thank you guys for the input... HKYstormFront is right on.. It looks like i need some convincing to get me over the edge to get me to do this. Like I said before, I have never felt this way before going into a mod so this is new territory for me.
I can think of two out comes if I decide to remove the canards: I can either patch up the bumper or get a new one. Decisions...Decisions :( |
patching a urethane bumper doesn't go very well typically (though they'd be small holes). i'd suggest using painter's tape and tape them on in place, take some pics and post them so we can see how it will look.
|
Yeah i also forgot that I have a clear bra installed on my bumper... so I will have lost the film if I change my mind.....!!!!!!!!!!:icon08:
|
here are some pictures. I like the look but it's drilling into the bumper thats my issue.

I'm gonna be the bad guy and say No. Don't do it.
You're saying they'll have just as much of an effect as driving on a track as at highway speeds.... Well, you don't really need downforce to change lanes... Just saying. If you're this conflicted, then you're not 100% sold on them aesthetically. So if you're not 100% sure before you install them, you won't be afterwards. And now, you've got holes in your bumper, and in your clearbra. So your options are suck it up, get the holes patched, or sell/buy bumpers. Unless you happen to find someone else who has the MR Blue and wants them, you're gonna have to get a New bumper. Not really worthwhile for the small mod, and even smaller 'gain' you're gonna see with them. Just my :twocents: :ugh2: |
with the diffuser you already have and the carbon'd fangs, i don't think it'd look terrible but you really would need to match it with some sort of aftermarket wing on the back to tie it all in. if you want to do that kind of mod, i'd hang on to them and do the wing and canards at the same time. if you don't want to do a different wing on the hatch, i'd leave them off the car.

Thank you guys for the input. I will follow my gut feeling and not put them on. Never been this undecided on a mod before so it must be for a reason. LOL these will be going on sale pretty soon.
|
Thats the point, wasn't trying to slam or hate or anything. Just if your gut isn't 100% into it, don't risk it. Let someone else do it first, and see it in person.
I have a wing sitting in the garage right now I want to install, I've never seen it in person installed, but I KNOW it is going to look sick. And that's the only reason why I'm okay with having my stock sport wing taken off, and new holes drilled. Otherwise, I wouldn't do it. |
No problem Chris. I appreciate the input. Good luck on your project.

I will say though, Patricks right, if you decided to get yourself a nice wing to compliment the canards, they would be more fitting. |
or you could just sell them to chris since he's going to be a member of the Official Salad Bar club soon... well, desert bar at least :bowrofl:

Just read this, I think you made the right choice. I personally don't like the looks of the canards, but that doesn't really matter. What matters is that if you're not 110% convinced you want this mod, then don't do it because later on down the road you're gonna be like, "this was the worst idea ever..."
|
Next mod... Without a doubt.
UNICORN BLOOD. It's amazing shyyyt! |

The argument is still valid because lots of people buy sports cars and never do anything with them. But those that prefer this style of driving don't do mods that are borderline irreversible without cost/headache. |
So I said screw it and installed them.... I like it! Sorry for the bad phone pics.

IMO these look sick. Do they fit on the Nismo bumper? Are they really universal as they say.
|

I think the Nismo bumper has a different curvature which will not make it flush with the canards. At the same time, the canards are pretty bendable, I am sure if you want to make it fit, you can do it. |
For your next mod you should add exclamation points to your Z. Just cover the thing in them.

Since we are pointing fingers at people. :ugh2: To clarify, no one looks at a super car and says "gee I wish that looked like a ford escort, it's just too flashy". If the guy wants to add some trim, who cares. IMO it really makes the front end look more aggressive. |

Relax I was talking about the thread title not his car.

looks pretty good i think  i do think a carbon wing on the back to tie it all together would improve the overall look, but that's just me. also, the EVO-R (or simliar) CF piece across the bottom of the rear fascia would help if you don't already have something like it:

to me, the EVO-R bit on the bottom never looks out of place, especially with all the CF you have up front. and doing a CF overlay on the stock wing might be a good compromise to doing an aftermarket wing. not to mention much cheaper
|
Hey robones can you post any high resolution pics if possible? I have a set of canards as well and am hesitating to put them on and think some nicer pics could throw me over the edge.
Do you still love them? Do you see yourself getting over them in awhile? Also, did you use the screws it came with or nuts and bolts? Thanks! |
yeah lll take some better pictures and post. I like the canards more and more. I think it gives the car such an aggressive face. I used all the hardware provided by Stillen. I didn't use bolts. It's held pretty good.
