ALL of that plus CVT uses a rubber band as main part for shifting-not good for high H.P.

To the OP, think about "Why does the Z need a CVT??" Now you know why doesn't the Z have a CVT??? . . . . . No?? . . . . Think deeply.... |

I have a friend who is a tech at the dealership. He replaced a bunch of CVTs. Everytime I go there for a visit they're replacing CVTs. It doesn't seem to have a good track record.

Here is my track record: I have an 08 Altima with the CVT. I love the smooth quite non-bumpy ride when I am just taking a "family" ride somewhere, or stuck driving in heavy traffic. If you've never experienced a CVT going up a steep upgrade with no shifting, abrupt bucking, and gear hunting, then you don't know the CVT's merits. And, since I don't abuse it, I've not had to do anything on it but change the fluid at the regular maintenance intervals. I also have an '05 Titan, and its the 'normal' auto tranny. I have had no issues with it either, and it is fun to drive too. ..and last but not least, I bought my 370Z with a manual tranny for the sportiness and the thrill. Each vehicle has its own prupose and mission, and I love driving them all.

the simple answer is that nissan's CVT transmission is made for FWD applications (altima, maxima, quest, etc) and the 7spd auto was made for the RWD based applications (370z, G37 coupe and sedan, M sedan, etc). also, i'm sure the torque rating of the CVT is much lower than a traditional automatic that's had time to evolve and become robust. the CVT actually makes a lot of sense in a FWD application since the packaging of it is, i believe, quite a bit smaller than a traditional automatic, especially a 6 or more speed auto.

I had the Altima as a loaner for a day. It's not a bad car, but the engine drone with the CVT is just awkward. It's not a deal breaker, just awkward sounding haha.

But, just to get back to the subject at hand - CVT is for front wheel drive vehicles. You find it in the Maxima and the Altima but not in the Rear Wheel Drive Nissans, to include the Z. I think the best explanation given is by HKYStormFront a few posts above this post...

I guess it's kinda judgement call. A friend of mine owns an Altima and he loves it. He told me the acceleration is so smooth (ok...certainly not as fast as Z), and you won't feel the gear-shifting hump like regular auto.
