2011 Base brakes are acting funny
 

This happens at least once a week. So, I press on my brakes gently to slow down or stop, and suddenly the brake pedal drops maybe half an inch or so as if there is no spring to push it back up. It really sketches me out each time it happens... Anyone have a possible explanation for this?

check your brake fluid level. bleed your brakes. you might have air in the system. worst case you may need either a master or slave cylinder.

I would do it in this order:
Check fluid level
If low top off
Bleed them either way

If this doesn't work or you can't find any problems then take it to the dealership. I don't know if you were just trying to reenact the symptom but there is no "spring" or return mechanism to the brakes, the hydraulics are what moves the pedal back up.

agree, it is probably air in your braking system.
