Future of the Z?

I am always intrigued by autonomous cars, this is an interesting video. Just take a step back for a moment before bashing, and think about how much this can change

not leaving my life in the hands of a system of 1's and 0's. too man variables that are encountered on the road that an algorythm cannot be develped for i.e. animals jumping in front of u, other drivers (computers) actions, debris in the road, etc...

right now if a computer system has a fault in my current car like, lets say abs, my car simply brakes less effectively. if a computer system like that ages, or has a fault after a long time, do ehicles drive less effectively/ more eradically?

maybe im just too closed minded lol

This would take control out of the hands of the person behind the wheel, or errr.. dashboard.
The only benefit I see with this is not needing a DD for nights at the bar.

But human error is the cause of most accidents... And I would counter argue that a computer with the right sensors can pay attention to many more things (animals, idiot drivers, etc...) than a human ever could.

but a computer cannot be instinctive. only reactive.

a computer cannot see a drunk ahead of u swerving on the highway and go, "hmm i probalby shouldnt pass him." a computer cant see the reflections of the eyes of a deer at night on the side of the road and know to slow down before one jumps out. a computer cant see a kid running thru his yard about to run out into the street to get a ball or something

all a computer can do is react once it gets into a sticky situation. you cant program instincts or intuition

A computer can see a deer better than a human, the logic for avoiding a drunk driver can easily be programmed, it will pay attention to a child on the side of the road when you never saw him.

I don't think the superiority of computers is being questioned here, just the fact that the world will be a different place

that will take a while.... at an affordable price, too much latency. like airbag deploying one second after impact. lol

Most of these things can be accounted for with proper programming, equipment, and a system that allows vehicles to communicate with each other.

So in the case of the drunk driver, while he may not be able to navigate the road, a chip in his vehicle can be sending out a signal to all the cars around him that there is an idiot behind the wheel and that the other vehicles should adjust their positions accordingly so that in the event of an accident, no one else is injured.

Or in the case of the deer. Vehicles with the proper sensors capable of detecting the deer can communicate the location and proximity of the deer to the surrounding vehicles so that as other vehicles come past the deer, they are already pre-adjusted to help minimize the potential of any problems that may arrise should the deer bolt into the street.

Same with the child example. There is actually a vehicle in production currently that comes with sensors that will apply the brakes and stop the vehicle should something cross behind you and you either don't see it or don't brake soon enough.

would suck if a tractor trailer is approaching to broad side you but your car will not allow you to back up because a beach ball came rolling behind your car.

beach ball survies, you die.
