I've been challenged! 2013 Audi S5. Any chance?
Just a little light-hearted fun here, guys...
So, some a**hole (aka. a good friend of mine :)) has ordered the new 2013 Audi S5 3.0T, and is so excited at the prospect of owning his "first fast car" that he's been talking it up, beating on my Z and challenging me to a straight-line race (at the local speedway, of course ;)). I'm not the competitive type, but he won't stop talking sh*t, so it's got to point where I'd LOVE to beat him, just to shut him up. So, what do you guys think? The new S5 is a supercharged V6 pushing, ironically, 333hp @ 7000rpm. That bodes well considering the Audi weighs around 4200lbs, but, crucially, it has way more torque, 325 lb-ft @ 2900 rpm, and all-wheel drive which'll help it out of the hole. Bottom line, Zero to 60 mph is apparently 4.7–4.9 sec, and standing ¼-mile is rated at 13.2–13.3 sec - slightly better than the Z's official figures (but not better than Motor Trend's claims). I have a Base Sport with Stillen Gen-3 intakes. He'll have a stock automatic. Oh, and we live in Vegas where it's hot as hell and are around 2200-2500 ft above sea level. It'll be close. My $35,000 versus his $60,000. What can I do to better my chances and defend the Z scene against such arrogance? Low rear tire pressure? Low gas? High-octane fuel? I've never been into drag, so I don't know the tricks. Haha. :driving: |

Eh, you're S.O.L.
Time to go F.I. |

The 3.0T (really S but hey, its Audi...) is a sneaky powerful engine which may be under-rated from the factory. Unless your buddy is incompetent, the Z has no chance.
You could fake a race, let him get all excited and drive off while you casually make your way down the strip :) - b |
nope :tiphat:

I would turn off VDC and drift the 1/4 mile. Win by style points

Put your car on a massive diet.

MT 370z vs AT S5??
Straight line in an auto is a lot easier than a manual.... if it was the other way MT S5 vs AT 370z there'd be a chance. |
Quick, go trade your manual shift in for an automatic. Then you might be able to keep up with him off the line. If not, just insult him and tell him he drives a German taxi. :tiphat:
|
Get off the straight line challenge. Change it to an autocross.
On a tight mountain road you can crush him. |
It'll take an auto to have a chance to beat that car. It won't work in a manual. There's a substantial accelration difference to the quarter mile between the manual and auto Z.
|
Settle it on a road course. This is the ''ONLY'' way to test car and man.

You will get smoked, that car cost almost 60k for a reason.
|
The car is 3200 vs 4200 lbs. non-professional drivers. Auto vs manual. It's a drivers race. Get a good launch say 3500 rpm.. See who wins.

Wait until the S5 is at the dealership for its first repair and then THE FOOT RACE IS ON!

Hey OP, I'm in Vegas myself. Let me know when this goes down so I can watch.
As for your question, I would put my money on the Audi for one reason. Traction. Z has horrible traction off the line while the Audi will have no issues at all. This will be even more pronounced at our crappy 1/4 mile track that we have here in Vegas. I get nothing but wheel hop in 1st and 2nd. Our track is badly prepped. Essentially this race will come down to who is the better driver but since he has an automatic and you have a manual he will have a much easier time of things. Not to mention AWD vs. RWD. How bad you get beat will depend on your launch. In a perfect world where drivers are the same and track conditions are perfect and you get a perfect launch the race would actually be pretty even. Personally I'd be more interested to see who wins in a rolling race. Just be careful on the 15 fwy heading to the track. After you pass Lake Mead exit it gets rather open and hardly anyone is on the road; Lots of rolling races happen here on the way to the track. Wouldn't want you to get a ticket |
Whoever gets the jump should win.

im interested to see how this turns out. Especially given how slow the MT Z is, the s5 is likely to be at 60mph before the Z even gets rolling. Golly the manual sucks on this car.

since his will be in the burn in period - i say jump on it :)

Lol and to some 800/mo on a car is nothing. To each his own.

What tires are you each on? His presumably stock. As others have said, driver's race, you do have a shot. Warm tires and practice launches :P

Well, if you got $6k to blow, 4.36 gears, a real locker LSD, sticky summer tires/drag radials (if I was living in LV, NV I would always run drag radials) should put the odds of winning in your favor easily.
I raced at LVMS, nice quarter mile track. |
All you said was that you have is Stillen Intake. Get some HFC, CBE and good tires at least.
And practice the lauch, practice, practice, practice...the Audi All-Wheel drive launch is no joke! |

Also, OP, it's pretty simple what you have to do ... Get in the Z, push the gas pedal about half way down, and drive it somewhere to trade it in on a faster car. |

He'll take you on the launch but you might be able to reign him in at the end. Top end on most AWD cars will be average at best whereas the Z is pretty respectable in triple digits. No missed shifts or your done.

Like everyone else said, it's probably a driver's race. It'll be close, but if he somehow messes up his launch you could beat him. |
It's not that much faster. If you had the cash, I'd slap a more bolt on's and a tune...drop any weight..spare tire etc...and get some better tires. I would also do some practice runs if you can since a half a second reaction time could mean the difference between a win or a lose.
|
I say shun him... German car drivers don't deserve an ounce of respect with there fake azz cockinezz. Most of them want to race cuz they really think german cars are superior and paper stats make them believe it. There's no sportsmanship in his invite. Its to feed his fake azz wanna be ego reassuring him of his 60k purchase. tell him to buy a real sports car then come see you. Straight lines don't mean shyt anyway.
But if you are going to do it? Race him on a road coarse. Race him hard fast and aggressive. Run that phony off the road... Don't let up on him and humiliate him. If you can't do that? Don't race him. |
Your friend probably has reason to talk up his car. The 3.0t is a really impressive engine by Audi. Putting it into one of their most balanced chassis ( sub-R8) makes the S5 fast. This is what the S4 is capable of when tuned:

You're gonna have to really be on point w/ your shifts and launch to beat it/ VQ37VHR
|
Or get Vin Diesel to drive it as said in the second post
|
Ur done for. Ur gunna lose.
|
S5 has the ability to get to 430hp with a simple tune. Regardless, you will lose
