The advatage with the Akebono's is really only noticeable if you track or autox the car which requires constant brake cycles that generate a ton of heat. It's not really 'safer' than the base brakes, but they are better for other reasons. Base brakes 'almost killing you' is a bit of an exaggeration and you'd probably be just as 'almost killed' doing the same thing with the Akebono's. They do way look better than the base brakes though.
