Soft and weak? The base brakes are more than enough brake force for that and the advantage over the sports package stopping distance is minimal. The advatage with the Akebono's is really only noticeable if you track or autox the car which requires constant brake cycles that generate a ton of heat. It's not really 'safer' than the base brakes, but they are better for other reasons. Base brakes 'almost killing you' is a bit of an exaggeration and you'd probably be just as 'almost killed' doing the same thing with the Akebono's. They do way look better than the base brakes though.

well i would presume that you have new brakes on order? if your gonna be stopping regularly at 70 mph. then get better brakes, otherwise the regular base brakes are more than enough stopping power.
no idea what caused you to have to stop suddenly at 70 plus mph but if you want to spend the cash on minimal gains over the stock brakes, (depending on what you get) go for it, i know i certainly dont go Balls out and to the wall everytime in the my car. i want to make it last and speeding on the highway is a good way to get my take taken away. lol "soft and weak" has me wondering what exactly you were doing..... lol if it was on a track id understand ...the best defense to this andto avoid is using your eyes to see whats ahead and get ready for it (change to lower speeds and gears) ( O ) ( O ) _______

Get the Z1 upgrade and make sure you get stainless steel brake lines, use a temperature resistant brake fluid like Motul RBF660 and select pads with aggressive initial (cold) bite. Sounds like your issues are in street driving, I suspect that your problem is one of response rather outright stopping distance. This setup should help in that regard. Once the brakes are into the ABS mode it's all up to the tires so make sure you'll got some good ones.
