Edit: Ok, just went to the garage, it does go off in neutral. Seems to be coming from right under the engine cover near the firewall, almost dead center. With a closer listen, it almost sounds like you can hear something like a disk drive spinning as well so maybe it's associated with the Music Box although it wouldn't make any sense for it to be connected to being in gear. What if being in gear was related to the the synchro rev feature, maybe some time of second control unit for the throttle bodies, being in gear it would have signal... in neutral not so much. Although that is a complete guess since I exactly know how the fly by wire function actually works on the z.

6MT don't push the clutch in and 7AT don't apply the brake prior pushing the ignition. Or, after it is started press once to turn off and twice quickly to access ACC.

I have the noise too, it's high pitched and constant, does not change with RPM, etc.
sounds like the ringing that you hear after coming out of a rock concert. I noticed it more after driving for awhile, it gets louder. Probably b/c every electrical component has warmed up. It's definitely electrical. I thought it was the HID lights, but it's still there if you turn the lights off. It's coming from right under the dash somewhere, but have not been able to pin point it. Might be a grounding issue or wire shielding issue of some sort. Another problem I have is that when my cell phone is in the center console or cup holder, I get the dreaded chatter through the speakers, just before receiving a call or text message. So I know their is a wire shielding issue there, but not sure if it is related.

I had a similar noise in my car. A high pitched whine coming from the passenger side. Guess what it was? My wife closed the air vent on the door. With the fan speed set to AUTO, the velocity of the air moving through the slits in the now-closed vent was fast enough to turn it into a dog whistle!
Check your vent and see if it's closed. |

This problem happens only when you raise the RPMs. I turned my A/C and radio off and the noise still occured. |

Had my 2pm appointment today at a different dealership, and this tech heard it right away. After a couple minutes poking around, he got pretty close to the root cause, but not quite.
There is a "white plastic bracket" with two wiring harnesses connected. By applying pressure to the bracket mounting points and/or the wires themselves (I'm not sure), he was able to change the pitch and volume of the tone. It's not necessarily that bracket/wire causing the problem since there could be other connected components above. Even with a flashlight, the area is hard to inspect without removing the glove box entirely. Next Thursday, they'll remove the glove box and get a close look. I'm optimistic that this guy will identify the suspect component then. BTW, my car is a base sport, so it's not Nav related. Last edited by 2bits; 06-22-2009 at 06:52 PM. |

Guys, EVERYONE has this noise. There were many threads about it a few months ago and it seemingly died off as people either 1) got used to it or 2) changed their exhaust which probably drowned it out with the louder exhaust note. The noise was described as a high pitch, electronic sounding whine that is difficult to localize but appears to be coming from the engine bay.
I too frequently hear the noise but fortunately it doesn't bother me as much and has just become a part of the car for me. However, I'd love to hear what's causing it and have it changed if possible. From the original threads about this, G37 owners claim to hear it as well. |

I may have started this thread, if not, another like it. If you raise the hood you will find it appears to come from under the engine cover. When inside the car, the sound emanates from the dash (between you and the engine, duh, lol), makes it hard to totally locate it. As Spearfish states, it goes back to the G37. If you are quiet after you turn off your engine, it will continue for about 3 seconds then die off. I can't hear it when the car is running, so I ignore it now. John |
