motul motor oil
So I was looking at Motul 5w-30 motor oil on amazon and there are a few types. I was wondering what the differences between them are and which is the one that I should be using for my Z if I decide to go with Motul.

The one that's been talked about on this forum the most is the 300V "Power Racing" formulation that comes in the metal 2L cans, if that's what you're looking for. I can't say I'd necessarily recommend it as a general purpose solution for our cars though. It's a great oil, but it's pricey and tends to be on the hygroscopic side (absorbs water faster), which will turn it acidic faster. If you're tracking the car, staying way on top of short-ish oil change intervals, and willing to shell out for it, it's good stuff. It's what I use (although I recently switched to the 5w40 version for summer). But if it's going to sit in your DD car for over 3 months sucking up humidity, especially if you're not parking in an enclosed garage (more humidity and temp-cycle exposure overnight), that's not so great. For normal-to-extended interval regular DD oil, I'd probably choose some other quality synthetic that's easy to source locally and more resilient, e.g. Mobil-1 Extended Performance.

royal purple seems decently priced for one of the brands recommended often. Anything I should know about that?

I couldn't say about either of those, as I've never used them or even researched them much. I use Royal Purple's gear oil for my rear diff and it seems to do a good job there and gets lots of recommendations, and I'm sure they're a quality company in general.

You can't go wrong with the Mobil-1 EP though. A similar good, widely-recommended option is Pennzoil Platinum.

Ive used Motul Eco 5w30 in my Z and my last car. No complaints, good stuff I feel.

I used 8100 Econergy 5W 30 with a Nismo Veruspeed fliter as supplied by Z1 Motorsports on my recent long distance trip. On the first leg I was using 5W30 Mobil 1 and a Nissan OE filter. On my return trip I changed over to Motul and the Nismo Veruspeed. There was a 15 degree difference in oil temp with the Mobil 1 at 220F (max) and the Motul at 205F (max). Both were the same routes and extended duration high speed interstate travel. Good stuff!

Going to motul.com and looking at your choices for non racing situations, you basically have one choice. What 6spd is using, the Motul Eco 5w30. The other two Motul 5w30 non racing oils are generally for diesel applications. That said. Do your research, a good place to start...

Interesting thing is that Amsoil does not say what their base stock is for their oils. All I have read is that it performs well. |
I get Liqui Moli 0W-40. It gets pretty hot in LA so 40 works for me.

I've used Amsoil for my first oil change and currently using Motul Eco 8100 on my second oil change. Don't notice much difference between the two. Then again, I've never taken my oil in for analysis so I don't know. As long as the engine is quiet, and not doing anything out of the ordinary, it's all good to me.
