Custom Titanium Shift Knob - what you think?

Just wanted some opinions on this shift knob, I was plaining on getting the Nismo or a tommy kaira but this seems a bit more unique. Being my first manual I'm not sure how much I would like it, I always seem to think the stock knob is too high up. Dude told me it should weigh 275 to 300 grams. Asking $100 think its worth it?:eek dance:

This looks a lot like the WC Lathe Werks shift knob. Look at their website, they have many other options you may like. Somewhat pricey, but the quality is great. However, if you're looking for a cheaper sphere shift knob, look at BLOX Racing.

steez,
Thanks for the quick response, you live in socal too I see, do you have a metal knob? Will it be a pain when the knob gets too hot or will just throwing a towel over it work?

I don't have a metal knob, but I had plans for buying one in the near future. However, my buddy who own's a s2000 has a metal knob, & your assumptions are the exact opposite of the reality, lol. In fact, after driving his car a few times I've noticed his metal **** knob is pretty cold at first touch, and as you touch hold onto it more it only gets as warm as your hands are.

FlawlessZ 06-18-2012 02:07 AM

Ordered it!
Think its worth it...more unique than anything I've seen avaliable in the price range.
Can't wait for the install!!!

I like it minus the ridges but it looks like a quality piece. I had a metal knob in my si and it would burn me in the summer. I had to bring a sock to hold it when I drove home from work. Just for reference, the car thermometer said 115 lol

Actually the ridges are the cool thing I love about the knob...Since it is a lot of hard work to burn the inside of the ridge blue without the outsides of the line changing colors so that's pretty much custom crafted...

Yeah the guy I bought it from was complaining about it getting hot as well but he lives in Hawaii. Lets just see how it goes If I end up keeping it, hoping it wont get affected because I don't park under the sun much.

It is very very difficult to remove, try to put extra layer of clothes to prevent it from being damaged...

FlawlessZ 06-19-2012 12:33 AM

Yeah i definitely don't want to damage the stock knob...Guess ill just have to take my time with it and maybe buy one of those strap grip tools...

This. Strap wrenches work fine, don't use cloths or anything, that will actually mess it up. Just use the strap wrench and put some muscle into it, it will come off. It's not THAT hard, just fights you a little bit.

Update-

Got the knob. Its bad a$$.

Removal of the stock knob wasn't that hard, just got the recommended strap wrench tool and it came right off. Easy.

Put the knob on, there is a gap between the knob and the leather. its about half an inch or so. I love the feel of the knob and everything but I will have to get rid of that gap....

WHERE CAN I BUY A LITTLE CUFF THAT WILL MAKE IT FLUSH?
PLEASE HELP!!!!

Face 06-22-2012 01:03 AM

Well, you can either get a short throw shifter and solve the problem, or, you can do like the PWJDM kits, and roll an o-ring down around the shifter, then put the boot back on and the (properly sized) o-ring should hold the collar of the shift boot flush with the bottom of the knob.

FlawlessZ 06-22-2012 01:22 AM

Don't think I want a short shifter yet!

LOOK WHAT I JUST FOUND!!! WOOHOO

WILL IT WORK?

Measure the size/diameter of the shift-shaft, cut whatever the length you need from a rubber-hose with the proper diameter, sleeve it onto the shift-shaft and put the shift-boot back on. It should work. Nice & Cheap

Face 06-22-2012 02:24 AM

Agreed. You don't need to spend $11. It's a matter of placing something on the shaft that props up the boot.

Not rocket surgery. It could be a zip tie. It could be an o-ring, it could be a small length of rubber hose...

FlawlessZ 06-22-2012 11:13 AM

Drive to work was fun! Sifts feel much more direct and faster... The knob wasn't very cold, within a matter of minutes it got warmer. I imagine in the winter it will get a bit colder. The heat is what I'm worried about.

I ordered the MOMO collar, if the ring under the leather where the boot stats wasn't so much bigger than the bottom end of the collar i would do that. Since I usually grab my knob sideways it would bother my pinky. Having that metal collar in between will give it a much better feel I hope. It should fit perfectly, i cant wait.

Coon-azz 06-22-2012 11:25 AM

Keep in mind that titanium heats up. consider getting a little cover or something for the knob during the summer months. Those I've had in the past would stay hot for some time after sitting in the sun. I use a Crown Royal bag to cover mine so its not so hot I can't start the car. On my Z I actually went with a non-metal one this time, but I posted a quick video previously on removing the shifter. Do a search on the forum there are several on here.

I simply put a rubber grommet around the shifter and zip tied into place.

The ring you talk about has two sides, and the bottom side is like concave shape.

The ring is actually tied to the boot by a plastic-tie, you can remove the ring from the boot, flip to the other side and tied it back to the boot with a new plastic-tie, therefore the concave side fits towards the base of the shift knob.

I did on mine, you can take a look:

Grab a zeetoyz shift collar. here's one on my 370 topped off by a team voodoo pearl shift knob.

http://www.the370z.com/members/edub3...shift-knob.jpg

it really gives the knob a finished almost factory look.

can get it here:

alcheng-

I think the boot will still get in the way while shifting...I've got big hands.

edub370-

Wish i had seen that sooner!!!!Ahh, I should get the MOMO one by Wed its black, stainless looks awesome tho. I might go for that if i dont like the look of this one.

How do you like your voodoo? They seller had this one made the same size spec i think...

edub370 06-22-2012 02:16 PM

I love it. like u said above, it makes the shifts feel much more direct. It definately gives the Z a little more character. i love doing little things like this that set the car apart and make it different.

side note: that black momo knob above is sick! i was looking to get it for a while before i went with the team voodoo

:iagree:

Go for it!!! Looks great. I think the ridges are probably one of those things that looks better in person than on pics. But it still looks pretty hot on pix. Congrats and rep for cool mod.

I have a TK, was in my g35 coupe, and I through it on my Z. As cool as it is, it's a $200 shift nob. Not one of my wisest purchases. One other comment, on a hot day kind of sucks Grabbing a metal nob LOL. Enjoy
