If you've ever seen an off road truck with one wheel off the ground spinning, but the other one stationary, it's because the diff isn't "locked". A limited slip diff locks both rear wheels to which allows for torque to transfer to both wheels. The VLSD is a locking diff but uses silicone based oil instead of a true mechanical LSD that uses gears/clutches. The problem with the VLSD is that once the oil overheats, it is no longer effective and you essentially have an open diff until it cools down. It's fine for most uses, but the mechanical or true LSD is the better option. There is actually a slight advantage to the base model if you ever want to install an LSD like the one from Quaife since you don't need to buy additional stubs shafts.
so what youre saying is. you only benefit from a vlsd or lsd if youre drag racing or launching your car from 0? how about cornering or when youre on the track? do you get any performance benefit? i might track my z one of these days.

absolutely more benefit, watch this:

as far as i know, the 370z has no braking limited slip function, just VDC to limit power if wheelspin is detected. coming hard out of a corner on a track, the inside tire will get light and start to loose traction as the power is applied, a limited slip allows that power to go over to the opposite corner where the weight of the car is leaning to power it out of a corner.

^^^what he said. If you plan to track the car, a true LSD is the best option.

How complex is replacing the stock sport VLSD with one such as the Quaife?
