Yes, pull the fuse now. If you wait until the unit fails, it may require a tow to the dealer and a ~$1200 fix. Several DIYs on this site - see link in my sig.

Another victim here. Came across this problem about a month ago, used the "tap" technique and everything started working fine for a couple of weeks. Problem came back like expected, so I tapped the SL, didn't work.... then hit it with a hemmer and nothing....
So I had to take the SL off and take of the hex screw part off the SL.
With the SL connected but hanging in my hands I was able to push down on it with a screw driver and put the car in ACC.
Then I pulled the Fuse out.

Its amazing the info on this forum, thanks to everyone for the insight, pics, etc. Really a great community.

I think that my sterring lock failed today. It wont do anything when i press the start button and i have the key light on the dash. The steering wheel is unlocked right now so if i pull the fuse will it start?

Nope. Follow one of the DIYs to try and fix it yourself (i.e. beat on it). Or take it in for the recall. You have to remove the fuse when the car is in accessory mode (ACC).

Pulled the steering lock fuse (quadruple checked). Still hear the damn thing unlocking when I go to ACC and car still won't start every time. How the hell is this possible?

Something else I've noticed is I don't get the key warning in the cluster. I get a clutch warning. WTF!

Are you sure it's not the fuel pump you are hearing? If you pulled the right fuse, there should be no noise from the ESCL.

Sounds like your clutch switch needs adjustment. Car won't start if it thinks the clutch pedal is not pressed.

Thanks, I'll check that out and give it a try.

Default Steering Lock

There is another little trick for the steering lock. If the lock goes bad, and you have a no start, you can remove the steering lock and wedge the lock in the down position, which tricks the BCM into thinking that the steering wheel is unlocked and ready to start...this can be done even after the lock fails. Just an FYI!

I've never really had the steering wheel lock failure issue, probably since my car is 2014, but having the wheel lock IS a pain in the *** when trying to move the wheels whilst doing work near fender liner...Anyways I was going to remove the fuse and noticed the I don't even have a fuse in the slot for the steering wheel lock fuse. Anyone else notice this in a 2014?

Thank you guys so much for the DIY. I laughed when the dealer told me to pay $1,221. One question I have is does the key fob go away or is it gona stay on? Do I have to manually delete the code? Thanks again guys

I went in for an oil change last week and I was notified of a recall on my car. I asked what the recall was for and they said it was for this steering lock issue.
Then I remembered reading this thread and decided to shed light on the recall.
They too quoted the repair at over$1000, but was covered because of the recall.
It was a Nissan dealer in Orlando.
