Only tool I used was a small, flat-blade screwdriver for the plastic pop-rivets.

After popping the hood, I removed the battery box cover. Then I pulled the pop-rivets form the plastic piece that holds the battery box cover and removed it. Removed the pop-rivet from the plastic piece that goes between the bottom of the windshield and the battery box and wiggled it out of the way. There is a piece of weatherstripping on top of the windshield-battery box piece that I did not have to remove - I just set the piece on top of the engine top cover. The fuse block I wanted to remove is the one to the immediate right (sitting in the driver's seat) of the battery. There are two tab that hold the fuse block in it's metal bracket - I pushed the tabs to the left (toward the fuse block) and pulled up on the fuse block. I reached down and guided the wiring harness past the bottom of the metal bracket (didn't want to take a chance on nicking/cutting any wires or putting too much stress on the connector). Next I laid the fuse block on top of the battery (I checked to make sure there was nothing conductive on back of fuse block) and removed the cover. Looking at the diagram on the cover, I determined that the steering wheel lock fuse was the fourth from the bottom on the left column of fuses. After verifying that the steering wheel was unlocked, I pulled the fuse (would probably have been much easier with a fuse puller). Then I put everything back together. Only difficult part there was getting the windshield-battery piece back in place - there is a lip that has to go under the windshield that was a bit of a pain.

Hope that helps.
Glad everything worked out well for you ,Rep's are accepted for the research and development of this project.

Had a few delayed starts since pulling out the fuse, but only 2-3 seconds before the button responds. No big deal to me, but just thought I'd let people know since a few people seemed to have experienced the same thing.

Thanks for the info .c2.

Do you, or maybe folks that have had this mod for a while, know if the delay is a harmless side effect? Meaning, it's not a symptom of another problem, or won't cause another problem?

I got my steering lock replaced last year but it looks like even the newer revisions break. Since being stranded and waiting for a new part sucks I'm thinking of pulling the fuse.

Also, props to the guy that kicked his steering lock into submission! I naturally should have tried that when mine broke!

I pulled the fuse in my '09 Touring yesterday (or was it the day before?) and do not have any delay (just double-checked), but maybe it takes a few starts for the system to learn that the SL has been disabled.

My guess as to what may be causing the delay: there is a signal from the SL relay contacts back to the computer that I think tells the computer that the SL motor has been energized. Since this signal is missing when the fuse is pulled, the computer waits a few seconds to see if it appears. Only problem I see with my theory is that not all owners are reporting the delay problem. I'm still investigating exactly what the "SL motor has been energized" input is, but don't have high hopes of finding out without better documentation (not likely as Nissan considers it proprietary).

Great instructions and pics. Thanks for sharing. Repped.
When I removed my SL fuse, I didn't have to remove the weather-stripping. I just swung that piece around and set it on top of the engine cover.

Mine started having delayed starts a few days after, first while it was fine. For the past few weeks it was delayed maybe 2-3 times at most? I'm not sure if it has affected anything else yet but as of now everything seems to be okay

It is delaying b/c the ecu is searching for all the inputs to determine that everything is good then it doesn't receive a input from the steering lock so it will recheck and determine that it is OK to start, why it does it once in a while I don't know.

Bummer. Well at least it won't happen again. (Depending on which replacement lock you received, you might not even have had to cut the wire.). Sorry you had to replace before you found us, but welcome!

not sure if this scenario was mentioned or not.

on mine the steering wheel is not locked. it won't go into ACC. won't do anything. i'm guessing the lock did not engage when i turned the car off. i'm going to try to turn the wheel more in the direction its going to see if the lock will finally engage. if that doesn't work then i'll pull the battery cable for 10 mins to reset the system. if that doesn't work should i turn this fuse solution?
