I dunno man, it's pretty hard to screw up an oil change.

So do we know what the problem was yet?

Sounded to me like a cross threaded drain plug.

Yes it was found. The OEM filter will not hold a seal. They tried filter after filter and the all leaked. The M1-110 Mobile 1 filter held a seal.

This info needs to be stickied. If that happen with multiple oem filters with you, your not the only one that's gonna have this problem.

Perhaps it would be wise for owners to request a filter other than oem right off the bat. I wonder if dealerships are gonna be difficult when it comes to retaining the factory warranty.

Kind of hard to retain a factory warranty, when the warranted parts break.

Way to go Nissan

Granted, part of an oil change is to ensure there are no leaks...but, I know myself, I don't check for leaks until at least a day or so later...

If it makes you feel any better/worse, my '09 FX35 started leaking oil moderately this winter while starting it when it was -10 below. I took it to the dealer immediately and they noticed that the seal was the problem. Put on a new one, and wallah. No leaks. This happened well after I had my oil changed. It was an OEM filter. Never have had problems in the past. Maybe it was a bad batch.

Ed Hicks Nissan in Corpus Christi. Im headed over there in about an hour to have a chat with the service manager and get him to make an entry in my service manual that an OEM filter will not hold a seal. And of course, make him sign it as well. Future problems with this put the accountability on Nissan and not me. Will post the results of our conversation afterwards.

That is VERY SCARY.

Do you know what the dealer is doing about it?

...and this problem should definitely be made into a sticky of some kind.

Coincidentally (and nothing to do with this issue) I have an OEM filter for my 350z sitting right in front of me as I type!

The magnuson-moss warranty act states in Section 102(c) that it is "prohibited to tie arrangements that condition coverage under a written warranty on the consumer's use of an article or service identified by brand, trade, or corporate name unless that article or service is provided without charge to the consumer."
So, unless they give you the filters for free, the dealer cannot deny warranty work because of after market parts, unless THEY can prove it caused a failure.

Spouting the MM act is all well and good and it's done all the time here. Unfortunately, in the REAL world, they can deny anything they want if they feel your aftermarket part caused a failure..This puts it back on the consumer to PROVE the part was not the cause. Got money for an expert witness and time to pursue this? All this on your dime through a lengthy court procedure BTW......

So, have you had a dealer void your warranty for an aftermarket oil filter?
