I'm just having trouble grasping the concept of having one of the quickest cars in the world and wanting to get the baby version and dump 30k into it.

Some prefer the idea of a RWD manual car when canyon carving or back road runs.
For the OP, honestly if you are doing an engine swap (2J/RB/LSx) I would consider the RX7 but I would not drop the money if you are not going that road. The 370z is a great platform to work with, but you are going to drop 25k on engine/upgrades and then you will need to do suspension, brakes and tires.

This.

Also bear in mind that the power levels you are talking are very much a stretch for the stock transmission, especially if you are talking high speed pulls.

4th and 5th struggle heavily if you spend a lot of time makin pulls there.

Turn the GT-R into the AMS Alpha Omega and be done. See you everyone else and thanks for playing.

Plus if you want something to just throw around the back roads it is simple. Get a Lotus Exige and dual charge it and be done. It doesn't get more fun than that.

isn't 700 hp overkill for backroads?

i saw the lotus dual charge - any clue on builders / costs?

as for the GTR it is such a pretty car stock - i kinda want to keep it as is - since its a 2012 and all that jazz

yes the RX 7 build would be a 20B - 3 rotor engine swap with custom 6 speed tranny. My builder has a straight frame which is being donated to the build if i go that route. engine would be the 20B with custom tranny and then its the Fortune kit and coil overs etc.

the last one he built like this weighed in at 2600 lbs - i know the lotus can beat it :-P

such fun decisions

Yea but you would need to be on the West Coast. But hey you could probably get it freighted there in back if you were willing to pay 13k on a veilside kit for the RX-7. Never priced the lotus out out and don't think the guy who owns the first one tells how much money he has in it. You would be out $40k +- for platform alone with the Exige. More if you want a newer model. You would have to decide where the cutoff is on what you want to spend on car + mods and then research it and see what platforms are available. It seems you have limited it to the Z and RX. But is that because that is what you want and falls within your budget or have you researched other possibilities? I would get on lotustalk and see if maybe there is someone closer that could build one.

with the money you're talking about i still say dump it into your GT-R. the AMS OMEGA just posted a 8.62 1/4 mile and 233.1 standing mile and that was only at 1200HP of the available 1600HP it has! and i'm sure the 1050 ft/lb of torque is enough for you.

yep, GTR + AMS Alpha 9 package ($25k) and that's all you'll ever need.

looking more and more like just sticking with the GTR after a few PMs that i have gotten.

i looked up the lotus boards pretty heavy over the last few hours and to do what Frank did in Cali takes Uber $$$ and it breaks a ton.

any sexy body kits like the fortune with that scooped out side panel for the Z. I think i am getting things narrowed down here pretty well.

Let me thank each and every one of you for helping in this discussion. I know its not over yet but you all are great !

I say go for the Z build..... because you can. I'd go for lightweight and balanced instead of all out power though. Maybe use the 370Z Nismo RC as your inspiration, but with a bit more grunt.

There are plenty of body kit's around, or if you're truly dedicated, have a custom kit made. Find a good enough shop and they can pretty much make anything for you want in the visual department. I kind of like the 'sleeper' look though.

These look pretty bad-*** too.

Hahahaaaa... you took the words right outta my mouth brother... I had a 93 Rx-7. The 13b alone can be modded to get 500hp without going to extremes. In puerto rico, they have the fastest street legal rx7 on record. 900 street legal hp. All on the 13b. In PR you will find 2/3 of all Rx7 specialists., The rx7's and the old skool corolla's are like the unofficial national classic sports cars of pr. Lol.

The drawback to the Rx is low torque to hp ratio. But... boost and handling capability keeps the car crazy fun.
