you can hydroplane at speeds > 25 mph, so...
what kind of tires do you have?

edit: > 35 mph

Locked up?

Did you jamb on the brakes when you noticed something wasnt right or just ease of the gas to regain traction?

If you were only going 45 then most likely cause of hydroplaning would be really worn or really crappy tires.

Glad tto hear you are ok (assuming you are ok since you are on a forum right after crashing into a mountain)

Bad tire tread I'm sure. OP, check the inside of the tires for camber wear.

Yep, like everyone said... tires. Also, has your car been in any accidents prior to this one? My 350z was in a right rear quarter panel accident and after I got it from the body shop I thought all was fine, but whenever I drove on the highway (especially in the rain) I always felt uneasy about the car spinning out. I thought it was because my car was lowered. Long story short, I went to get the car aligned and the mechanic told me I had a bent tension rod or camber arm (not sure which) and went back to the fu*king body shop and they fixed the issue that they FAILED to fix.

Problem solved.

Roads are very slick in the rain, if in fact it has NOT rained in a while. The grease and oil builds up and comes to the surface as the water penetrates the highway. Wide tires are prone to hydroplaning too. Gets worse with worn tread. Riding a motorcycle makes you much more aware of this, as i have learned from wadding a few bikes.
