Powercoating color question for Sport Package Rays

So for my 30th birthday present my gf decided to surprise me and powdercoat my wheels but I'm glad she ended up telling me the surprise before actually doing it because she didn't want to do it wrong.

I have a Magnetic Black 370z with Sport Package Rays wheels and I've always liked the look of the hyperblack wheels. But as a browsed at serveral websites, I noticed that some angles i dunno if it's due to the lighting, its super light. I like it dark but not having it look like Gloss Black - to me that just looks cheap as if someone spray painted the rims themselves. So what color should I get? Is there a code? Some pictures I find the 40th anniversary edition a little too light for me, esp during day time.

The other question is what do I do with the center hub cap? There's an emblem either glued to it or something. Since that piece is not metal, I guess it needs to be painted? So has anyone with any luck doing this? Did you mask it or what? Paint or can it be powdercoated with the rims together?

This would be ideal!!!

But it does seem like it's the same as what the actual 40th Anniversary which was released in the US look like:

This seems a little light for me during day time....so is this called hyperblack?

Ideally, i would want my car to look a little bit more like what they do with... LF-A, GT-R, Italia, IS-F, or even the current RX-8. I think they're a little darker.

Thank you in advance for helping out a buddy.

The first pic looks better. Both pics seem to be completely different almost, but the lighting can make a difference. You can always ask for a dark charcoal finish on the rims, or just go plan black w/o the gloss.

40th Rims are no where near black... they are closer to the color of the car (maybe a little darker but not all that much). Don't flame me, I know they are not the same color as the car but they are closer to that than black.

Just call a powder coater up and see if they have color swatches they you can take with you or a portfolio of colors that they can do.

Yea, I don't want it looking like gloss black, but I think the 40th could be a little bit darker as it looks very grey under normal day time. I saw the color of the GTR or the ISF or LFA, i really like. The LFA even has that unique shine which i like...almost chrome-y but not really.

Hit up Mike The Powedercoater on this forum. He can probably help with your question(s). I had my sport rays powdercoated, 80pct gloss, 20pct matte black. I don't believe this is what you are looking for though from your comment. Just took those off and went with Matte Black TE-37SLs. Here is what the sport rays looked like.

Nice Z, ZCar!

and yes Scruffy, that 2nd picture is Hyper Black... I had them on my Z32. Lighting can make a huge difference, if you look at the 2nd picture of my Z32 (still shot) the front wheel almost looks like a different color lol.

Cheers man, yea those are a little too much black for me. I think I'd like to have a slit hint of silver to it.

I like them but do you find them lighter than the 40th anniversary hyper black?

iSteve370 04-23-2012 04:23 PM

I'd go with 20% matte black, it's dark without the shine but not to dull. It should be equal to the black trim around the windows and the same as the wiper arms.

I'm going to say that the 40th anni wheels look a little darker, but like I said, the lighting can be deceiving.

yah, i think darker color wheels look good in matte. :) unless it's like a 3pc wheel then the spokes can be glossy or matte and look :yum:

anyone on the forums with a Gm Z with gray/40th color wheels? I wonder how that looks...
