regular gas + octane booster= ? RON
I curious if anyone has run regular gas and an octane booster that is compatiable with the Z in daily communting. If so post your experience.

I put 6 bottles of octane booster in every fill up... :happydance:
But seriously, I am pretty sure this stuff has all been tested and it doesnt work... :twocents: |
those bottles aren't cheap either.. think it'd be less expensive to just get the high octane from the station hehe

use toulene if you're serious.

Depends on how you define "work".. because I expect some of them make all kinds of claims.
I can say that I have a few older cars with high compression that detonate if I run regular. If I find myself in a situation where I'm not able to purshase premium, I put one of these in and I don't have an issue. Check the google, I bet it's been studied in labs, just make sure it's an independent study. |
I just checked the Google for myself. It seems like a tough question to answer, due to variability in additive types, the gas you start with, and the methods of test. Next time, I'll wait until I hear the detonation and then add it in order to determine if it is working.

You have to remember that the dealership put regular gas in your car when you bought it. I doubt that regular gas will mess up the car. Now if you have a turbo charger or supercharger, then that is a different story & you better go premium. Getting the middle grade is a joke & a waste of money. The reason is that you really have no idea if it is 1% better than regular, or a couple % lower that premium. Everytime you change your oil drop in an octane booster when you fill up your car.

The car is tuned from Nissan to require 91 AKI, and unless you never put it under load, it's a bad idea to run a lower than recommended octane. Octane boosters, at best, may add .5 AKI. I don't know of any cars tuned to take advantage of midgrade. Might be worthwhile on an older motor tuned for regular that's prone to ping for one reason or another (e.g., carbon deposits on pistons creating hot spots). What does changing the oil have to do with anything? |

Also no real benefit of higher octane than you are tuned for. Those products are def not something I would mess with... def won't increase performance, all it could do is hurt.

Several threads similar to this. Last time I came across one I replied with some of the actual math that one should use to calculate effective octane rating based on adding things.
Math is fun kids, check it out :D If you are using a bottle of snake oil, do the math at what it does per volume of fuel you are working with and make an informed decision. Non-math example with real world economics: If I use 15 gal of 87 octane, I save about $4.5 vs buying premium (30c per gallon, some spreads are lower so this is a high number). You are not going to raise your the effective octane 4 points on 15 gallons of fuel for < $4.50. If you find such a product, let us all know. Just watch out for strangers hanging around your house...it may be Big Oil trying to silence you. - b |
