Insuring Z

Need some help polling other Z drivers who have an accident on their record (or tickets, or both).

I have one at fault accident in 2011 and have had traffic citations within the past two years Long story short - the cheapest quote I got is $5K/yr after pretty extensive shopping. Other info: 29yo male; excellent credit, California drivers license.

For others who may be in similar situations:

- How much do you pay annually for insurance?
- Assuming I am able to maintain a clean record going forward, how long will it take before my insurance starts to decline?
- Who insures you?

Th3 On3 04-17-2012 03:43 AM

I have geico I pay 277 a month =[

And that's a good driving record . But I'm 22

Insurance is a regional issue. You might want to post this in the CA area of the forum to get better answers. Here you are going to get different answers because insurance varies greatly county to county and state to state.

Are you quoting out standard 500/500 policies? I would quote deductible for collision at 1K and really makes sure the policy fits your needs. You probably can get it down 20-25% but as mentioned, its regional and you have a few strikes on you which the cretins will take advantage of (our car insurance industry needs regulation but that won't happen...politicians are too busy convincing people of change).

Marriage, house (bundled policies) will help. Also if you have the means, can you get a beater and insure the Z as a secondary vehicle? The beater you use for commuting and other needs (just keep comp on it).

Just some things to play around with.

As for violations it depends on companies. Some are much better then others. Geico is not a good company once you have any incidents. Progressive can have low rates but crappy service.

State Farm, Liberty and some of the mid tier vendors are who I prefer to deal with. Once with them, they often have accident forgiveness (1 per 3-5 years) and other things. All state is expensive but good service.

Some companies have deals that give you 5-10% discounts. Mountain biker? Join IMBA and you can get the IMBA rate with Liberty. That is just one example, there are dozens out there if you do the research.

Good luck,

- b

I pay around 140 full coverage with allstate. 24, one at fault (i was the middle car in a sandwich, I was responsible for the 720 in damage to my front end, not the 8500 in rear damage), following too closely and failure to carry insurance.

emx620 04-17-2012 09:53 AM

25, average credit, 1 at-fault accident on my record, and I'm ~$100/month for full coverage with $500 deductibles on my Z. I also have full coverage on a 2006 Honda Accord, so together, its about $175/month for both vehicles.

+1.....

davidyan, given your situation I would also recommend getting a POS even if you do not drive it & have that as a primary while the Z will be your secondary. Try taking defensive driving b/c that can always help to reduce your insurance by 10-15%.

I just recently got rid of my '08 Infiniti G37S & the monthly payment was $109 a month. I put my dad as the primary driver. Now that I have the '12 Nismo I decided to put my mom as the primary driver....lol. Doing this helps to lower the cost & it is all about playing the game. I am 30 yrs old which also helps. I have awesome credit & no driving record. I try to make sure that my driving record doesn't get f'd up either. If your 25 yrs old & younger (males) you will be paying a premium since you are under the age of 25 & I believe for females if they are under the age of 21 or 23 yrs old.

chrischhorn 04-17-2012 10:28 AM

I'm 23 with a 2 tickets and 2 accidents (1 dropping off soon). 1 which i was at fault but i pay $183.28/mth for full coverage. USAA ftw i guess.

lemon-fresh 04-17-2012 10:46 AM

27 with one NOT at fault accident and the Z is currently my only car. I pay ~$100 a month (full coverage), like others have said it might help to own an additional crappy car and ensure the Z as your secondary.

kenchan 04-17-2012 10:56 AM

i think insurance looks at citations received in the past 2yrs. then they check entire history for any major accidents.

i would shop around.

NickTurnon 04-17-2012 11:47 AM

21- Progressive- Paying $115 A Month with full coverage

I am on a family plan though, so its cheaper. I think on my own they wanted $150 a month

USMCASA 04-17-2012 01:22 PM

31 - 6 tickets (one tint)
200 a month with Nationwide

Farm Bureau wanted to go up to 600 a month but I told them to shove it up their ***

and those 6 tickets are within the past 2 years of owning the Z, never had a ticket in my silver charger or silver eclipse or cbr954...
must be the yellow

TerribleONE 04-17-2012 01:27 PM

^ its gotta be the color...

21 full coverage 63$ a month. I am the primary driver, however it is the second car I have through statefarm. The Z is cheaper than my chevy duramax!

zgh5002 04-17-2012 01:45 PM

24. 1 ticket for failing to yield. Was quoted $90/month for full coverage with progressive.

Cristobal09 04-17-2012 02:51 PM

I was with state farm and paying 187 a month with 2 cars under my policy, married, homeowners insurance and a slight accidennt that was my fault back in 2010. I switched to allstate and am now paying 112 a month (for both cars) for six months (again, married/homeowners insurance/gold plan where I get one accident a year that doesnt jack up my rates, direct removal from my checking, and im 30). Id give allstate a shot.

Nismo89 04-18-2012 12:54 PM

i pay $877 a year for full coverage, im a 22 year old, turning 23 May 17th. ...although i dont have any wrecks, DUI's or any voilations of any sort on my record..

so after doing the math, i pay $73.08 a month

Travelers Insurance

Th3 On3 08-24-2012 12:22 AM

^^^ wtf!?! How did u get something like that? Is that full coverage?

- The One -

Nismo89 08-24-2012 12:33 AM

yes full coverage. reason being is because they asked me " does it have a turbo?"... i said no.... and they said "well then its not considered a sports car to us... only went up a couple hundred..... THEN a months later i got a letter in the mail from them stating : "W have reviewed your policy with us and it seems you are a very safe driver and therefore we have lowered your rate 300 dollars, have a great day

im 23 now.......... and recently ( last fall) a deer hit the drivers side left front fender ... causing damage..... (i slowed down , to 15-20 mph... flashed my lights , yelled at it and it STILL ran AT my car and hit it) ..... and so after that.... my rate went up $100.......... still cheap, but again, i never have gotten a ticket, never gotten arrestted, no wrecks.... nothing

so right now..... i pay $977 a year... i expect it to drop with the safe driver discount this time next year

81.41 a month.

USMCASA 08-24-2012 06:31 AM

Chemy 08-24-2012 08:19 AM

You only gave a small amount of info on what insurance companies use to calculate your rate.

Other information use is:
Whether or not you get collision and comprehensive coverage?
Your deductible?
Your maximum liability insurance coverage?
Insured location? City? Park on the street or garage?
Type of driving?
How much you drive?
Student/Married/Kids?
Do you own a home?
Is the car financed or not?
And last but not least what insurance company you go to. Progressive v All State have different levels of costumer service which effect the base rate.

With out the rest of the info you can't compare your rate to anyone else's. Your 5k rate could be normal. Or it could be $500.

Eighties Meta 08-24-2012 08:20 PM

42 , middle ground credit, no accident or tickets previous 10 years. Geico wanted $2400/YR full coverage with a $500 deductible. Told them to Stick it, Progressive $1450/YR $500 deductible. I'm ok with this.

Damn. California must be an expensive state to insure in. Here in Texas I just switched to Safeco (home and auto) I'm 48 with a clean record and decent credit and pay less than $1200 a year for 1k deductible full coverage on my Z and new BRZ. Recently switched from Travelers where they wanted $1800 a year. One pissed off email to my agent about my Travelers rates and he shopped around and saved me $600 a year on my auto and over $200 a year on my home owners ins. :)

MarkGideon 08-24-2012 08:40 PM

Guess I will chime in on this one too. I am 44, married, homeowner, good credit, no tickets or accidents--really a "good" risk for the insurance company. My Z is insured with State Farm, along the other cars, house, etc. I have a $1,000 deductible and otherwise full coverage.

My six month premium for the Z, after about $170 in discounts, is $293, or less than $50 per month. The six month premium for my 2012 Altima last time was only 51 cents less than the Z.

danegrey 08-25-2012 07:13 PM

all very interesting
state farm all my driving years 500 deductible, SW Ohio pay 77 a month, with multi-discounts, 2 cars, apt insurance, etc...
I'm 59, no tickets/accidents last 5 years

Tribalpinoy91 08-25-2012 08:30 PM

Wow i pay 250 a year.

sonic370 08-25-2012 09:03 PM

2010 rouge don't ask wife wanted it.
2009 370z sports package total 155.00 a month which i think is to high

not related to my insurance. also thought using one's credit score to determine
your insurance rate was another insurance rip off. what does that have to do with it.

it's the law you have to have it anyway. high credit scores do not make you a better drive.

But in the insurance world, high credit scores do suggest you are more responsible than someone with really bad credit, in general, and thus a better risk to insure.

sonic370 08-25-2012 10:05 PM

Agree but still think its another way for them to
charge you more

srbrubak 08-26-2012 11:04 AM

I have State Farm for car and home owners insurance. I pay $300.47 for 6 months for full coverage on my 05 Altima with $250 deductible on collision. It went up due to my wife having a minor accident that was her fault. I pay $299.61 for 6 months for full coverage on my 2010 Z with $100 deductible on collision. So far I am accident and ticket free, but the way I drive my Z I have been lucky so far for not getting any tickets (the radar detector helps). Also, I am an old guy, will be 66 in December.
