Most manual transmissions will hold big power with a clutch upgrade as long as you don't power shift.

You're right, there are some manual transmissions that grenade pretty easily though or at a minimum can't handle massive power, like the 6sp MT in Evos.

I wouldn't mind if we had both. I just feel like the Z's shift feel is not as terrible as many people on here make it seem, granted I'm probably not as experienced as some.

By no means is it horrible, if I had to rate the gearbox overall on a scale f 1-10, a 10 being an s2k gearbox that in theory handles the power and tq. I'd give the Z transmission an 8. There are things one can do to improve it like swap out the transmission fluid for Redline MT85, it made a noticeable difference for me. The only reason I mentioned the transmission lump is because Nissan built a good car in the Z. It looks fab, the VQ37 motor when allowed to breath and teamed with an oil cooler is potent and it handles as well as many other cars that cost more. I liked the heavy steering feel and frankly I'll long for the synchro rev when going about my usual daily drive. Thing is, with all that going for the Z how could Nissan cut corners on the transmission?

Prospective owners should not turn away from the Z because of the lump, its proven to be durable. Its just that the lump reminds me that while it looks and can sound like an elite sports car, the Z is still a mid level import granted a very good one.

Hey NyBlade, what are must do mods on base 6mt Z? I dont even have sport package. I want to keep it clean and simple but just a little better performance.

NYBladeZ 04-21-2012 11:15 PM

If you are looking for pure performance and not aesthetics I say start with some high flow cats or test pipes (more likely to get you in trouble). The cats are very restrictive, after that a quality catback, the forum has a database of exhaust notes that can give you a broad range of ideas. I know Motordyne has a great rep for exhaust with their ART pipes (fancy HFC) and new exhaust as does Fast Intentions. One thing I suggest you don't skip, if you drive in hot weather and like to drive "enthusiastically" get an oil cooler, it will help with longevity. You don't need a really big oil cooler if you aren't going to the track but the VQ runs HOT! No point throwing down for performance mods if you're oil constantly gets so hot that you are always in limp mode.

The lack of sports package won't kill you, you still have the same engine as everyone else. Take your time, pick good parts, keep an eye out on the forum's classifieds and if you don't do your own installs pick a reputable shop, I would have save $ and headaches if I didn't try to save on the installs. Good luck!

cool thanks man, like you said a few times the exhaust note tone is dissapointing so i want a little more growl even drone like the 350z.

NYBladeZ 04-22-2012 12:10 AM

Fast Intentions, Motordyne, Berk are all good quality catbacks. Greddy and HKS seem to be a little overpriced albeit a bit more rare. If you want loud go GTHaus but that's only for the extreme ;)

Buddyz, if you're in California then we have more restrictive relations than most other states. We're not even supposed to have the HFCs on. That being said you're def more likely to be caught with TPs or LTHs . I think HFCs and a good CBE are the way to go like nyblafez said. If you're not worried about that though, LTHs and the CBE are def the way to go for max NA power gains.

The Z is great for what it is but considering that we are the "evolution" of the 350z and HR motors are showing great torque gains after F.I. whereas we are not (damn you VVEL), I guess in hindsight I wanted a little more. 350whp sounds much nicer than 33x.xx whp. My CF pieces weighed less than my stockers, not saying the OEM pieces aren't already stupid light but CF was still lighter, add a braille batter and I don't think I could have shaved anymore without going full racecar.

When my Uprev tune was done, it was done for torque, not HP. I now have max torque on tap at 3200 Rpm vs 4800 rpm before the tune. Max HP is probably the worst indicator of useable power. Torque = Power, and the sooner torque comes on, the better. Especially on a race course or a dragstrip. Be honest, how often do you drive this engine over 6000 RPM? Your fillings will fall out. :p
