Yet, most men diagnosed with prostate cancer will die from something other than their cancer (typically heart disease). PSA screening is controversial but the best form of detection (along with digital rectal exam) that we currently have. If this guy died in his 50s from prostate cancer, he had particularly aggressive disease. Many urologists actually feel we over-treat prostate cancer in this country. There is a movement towards active surveillance in order to maintain quality of life for as long as possible and evidence thus far supports this is a safe approach in select patient groups. However, every patient is different and a good number prefer early treatment (surgery or radiation) over active surveillance.

Where did it mention he died from prostate cancer? I would have guessed lung or pancreatic if he passed so quickly.
He did not mention he died of prostate but I mention that because that is what I had...I was picked up on a PSA test as it jumped from 2 to 4.5 within one year..then it was confirmed with a biopsy..

I chose surgery when I found out that if you choose radiation and it does not work..well then you cannnot have surgery because of tissue damage..and basically your out of luck except for some kind of suppressant pills,.,.that is what has happened to two guys I know who chose radiation

I just figured..get rid of the damn thing and let that be it..the robotic surgery was nothing..in fact I had more pain from lying on my shoulder during the entire operation..

When they analyzed it they said it was a very aggressive form of cancer and I would have been dead in five years..that was a year and a half ago..

Part of the cancer had reached the outside of the prostate and this caused them concern that maybe it escaped,..i had to go back for more testing and so far nothing has shown up..

Doctors were all great and they saved me from a very unpleasant and premature death.. So now I am spreading the word...

Well education and enlightenment are the keys!!

And also I forgot to mention I did not chose radiation because I would be embarrassed if my urine was glowing...

Glad things went well for you and you're happy with your care. May your PSA stay undetectable!

I'm glad you're doing well now brother. It wasn't your time. I don't want to get religious on a forum but just want to say you are blessed brother. I hope you remain cancer free and wish you the best.
