This thread makes me sad. On the contrary, I find it very entertaining. ModShack hit the nail on the head. Why are folks in here who don't own a Z

For those that are on the fence I'll make it real simple. If you aren't planning to track the car, just buy it. The car will never go into limp mode on the street, stick to premium synthetic oil and it will handle the 260F you occasionally see in hard driving easily.
If you do track your car, well, you've got some tough choices to make. The 370Z is still the best value for money sports car out there, even with its shortcomings. Add the oil cooler and forget that you ever had a warranty, go to town with mods ... or pay $20K-$30K more for a real sports car. Last edited by ChrisSlicks; 06-07-2009 at 10:05 PM. |

It's lame to bash, but I don't think people should be flamed for being on the fence. The gauge did not stop climbing past 260 on my test drive, and I do track. If Nissan handled the situation like BMW and fixed the issue and retroactively addressed the earlier buyers, I am sure nobody would complain having one of these put on by Nissan

So after reading this post today, I was curious about the supposed temp issue so I decided to go out and test it myself on a hot day (was 90 degrees here in the shade). So I went out and beat on my car for a couple hours. It was a mixture of stop and go traffic with multiple red line runs mixed in from lights. I even cruised around in 4th at about 60 mph for a while. Beat on the car some more....couple more red line runs followed by traffic...and I could not get the temp to rise above ~250 degrees (give or take 5 degrees - could have reached 260) no matter how hard I tried. Limp mode was NOT happening.
So what this means to me, is there is no way in hell I will ever have the car go into limp mode unless I absolutely HAMMER (borderline destructive) on the car on a very very hot day. If tracking the car means I have to beat on the car more than I did today, I will never see the track. Moral of the story, IF you like to drive extremely hard on the street, you probably wont be hitting limp mode any time soon. This post has the feel of "this car will go into limp mode unless you drive it like a grandma"...which couldn't be farther from the truth. The car performs as it should under street conditions in my opinion. Anyways, just my two cents, take it for what its worth. Edit: It could also be that my "driving hard" is not nearly as hard as someone elses hard ...but i doubt it. Last edited by zZSportZz; 06-07-2009 at 10:07 PM. |

370 problem or was it there on the 350 also???
Gang,
Is this a 370 problem only or was it there on the 350 also? Oh we don't know, is that the answer? Why don't we know? I'll bet I may have the answer? The 350 didn't have an Oil Temp Gage and the 370 does. If that is the answer then I have a solution for the over heating problem on the 370? PUT SOME MASKING TAPE OVER THE GAGE SO YOU DON'T SEE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! Problem solved............ Hang on a second so I can get my flame suit on. Okay, got it on so flame away.

After I read this thread, I switched the CAMP2 in my G35 to monitor the oil temp just to see what it would do. I managed to get it up to 230F on the fwy with occasional boost under 7 psi, but like the others have said, theres no way I'd push it any further unless I'm on a track. BTW ... the coolant temp stayed rock solid at 200F.
If you guys are driving it that hard, the car is being driven way outside what most owners will be doing. Just get the oil cooler. You may even want to consider a dry sump. |
