Is short shifting bad or good for your car's engine?

Hum, interesting question .... As long as your not bogging the engine and causing it to buck and stall it shouldn't hurt it.

also whats the best time to shift while driving around town that give best gas miles? I shift at 2500-3000 rpm.

If you use the gas mileage meter it acts as a vacuum gage and you can squeeze the best mileage out of your car that way. The best I've been able to squeeze out is about 29.5mpg. But, I haven't been on any long flat stretches yet and my car still needs a little more breaking in to get the best mileage. Around town I'm getting an avg of about 24.99999999. Never seem to break 25mpg around town something always causes me to smash the gas or sit at extremely long red lights. Doh ...

However, I didn't buy this car to get the best mileage I could. If I wanted that I would have kept the Prius. That thing got 48-50 mpg almost all the time. My commute is short right now. But, if I start that hour long commute again each way.... I might have to lease one. It will pay for itself in gas savings .... it's that good!

MPG's are not to be worried for on a sports car.

Short shifting is fine, as long as you shift smoothly and don't let the engine speed fall below 1200rpm after the shift,

Regarding the range of engine speed, I will suggest the engine speed will fall between 2000 - 2500rpm after the shift. :tiphat:

MPG meter is another wasted guage in the Z. Why of all things, not put a oil pressure guage in a sports car, yet throw an MPG meter in it?:ugh2:

I have never had better than 18 mpg even driving like a granny.

I just shake my head when someone asks me what king of gas milage I get in my Z. As if I care?
